Virginia Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes. The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future. 0:09:10

    Mercury Rising - Philip Sparke

Mercury Rising was commissioned by sinfonisches blasorchester wehdel and its conductor Thomas Ratzek, to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018. They premiered this piece in their half-century concert on 2nd November 2018 in the Bremerhaven Stadttheater in Germany. Designed as a virtuosic and lively opener, Mercury Rising opens with nervous energy and driving, syncopated rhythms in a blaze of colour. The horns and saxophones then introduce a broad melody, which the trumpets subsequently take up after a change of tonality. A quieter moment introduces a distant fanfare on muted horns over bubbling semiquavers in the low clarinets. This is interrupted by a passionate tenor melody but soon returns on the full brass section, accompanied by echoes of the opening woodwind figuration, and is extended to bring the piece to a triumphant close.

Battle Of The Winds - Duble

If you've been looking for a march challenge, this is it! "Battle of the Winds" is a classic circus "screamer" that wails from start to finish! Low brass and woodwinds get a workout from top to bottom, and the upper voices squeal in "battle" with the lower voices. Everyone will thrill to the gaudy fun of this vintage circus tune. Not for the faint of heart, and while it's a technical workout, it's well worth the effort. One of the most challenging and exciting marches you'll ever hear!

Everest - Top Of The World - Elliot Del Borgo

A musical tribute to the tallest mountain on the earth, this brilliant mono-thematic work has striking bell-like effects in the brass and makes superb use of a large percussion section. Contrasts in texture and articulation are numerous and the music is alternately bold, aggressive and haunting. This is another fine selection that can be considered for contest and festival use. Defiance - George Sweet

A calm opening sets the mood for the piece before it moves into an uptempo theme. The piece contains lots of different instrumental colors with interplay between brass, woodwinds, and percussion. All of this is developed into a return of the main theme followed by a coda. This is a perfect selection to showcase young bands in contest/festival performance.

A Tom Sawyer Portrait - Jarvis

Mark Twain's colorful characters come to musical life in "A Tom Sawyer Portrait!" The journey begins in St. Petersburg, Missouri, with a jaunty musical portrayal of Tom and Huck and a ragtime sequence which depicts the sleepy river town. An Americana-style ballad follows that is tender, lyrical and poignant. This segues into a "no holds barred" blues section representing the mighty Mississippi. The Portrait concludes with our heroes' return, featuring a recap of the opening theme augmented in the brass and accompanied by woodwind runs and exciting percussion. This is a great selection for the concert band that demands solid musicianship but will reward students for their efforts!
