Benjamin Franklin's love for the art of music was well documented in American history. Robert W. Smith has selected three musical moments in Ben Franklin's life and created this unique composition for the concert band. Beginning with a setting of "My Plain Country Joan." a song composed as an anniversary gift to his wife, Franklin's jovial personality is evident through the timelessness of his music. The second section is based on Franklin's glass armonica. The delicate and ethereal sounds of this beautiful instrument provide a quiet moment of reflection for all. The finale is based on Franklin's "magic squares." an arrangement of numbers in a square where all rows, columns and diagonals add to the same sum. Robert W. Smith extracted the melody based on the numeric sequence in a 3 x 3 magic square. The resulting musical statement and fugue truly shows the close relationship between mathematics and music. An amazing concept, an amazing cross-curricular piece!

It Is Well (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
First published in 1876, "It Is Well With My Soul" was written by Horatio Spafford following several challenging events in his life. The beautiful lyrics were set to music by composer Philip Bliss. This setting by Robert W. Smith is scored for the developing band and written well within the capabilities of bands in the second year of instruction. Simple, reflective and poignant, "It Is Well" will be a valued part of your concert or festival program.

At the heart of this piece are several elements that inspired the composer. First of all: nature, infinite and inexhaustible, giving life and power, something bigger than humans can grasp. The composer used the Gregorian hymn 'Veni Creator Spiritus' as a leitmotiv to reflect this idea. A second element was the passing of David Maslanka, a dear friend of the composer, honoured in the work by a few musical 'echoes'. At the end of the work, there is a passage for optional choir in different possible settings. The Source was commissioned by the Banda Giovanlie Regionale ANBIMA FVG, Italy, and is an impressive, stirring and moving piece of music.
