Spirit of Independence' was commissioned by the Koninklijke Fanfare 'Onafhankelijkheid' ('Independence') from Wiekevorst (Belgium) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The piece depicts an enthusiastic amateur music club, practicing and making music together in an attentive and companionable atmosphere. The conductor has the good habit of trying to improve the sound of the fanfare by means of practicing chorales and hymns. An Overture for Concert BandThe overture Harlequin was composed in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Swiss Federation of Wind Band conductors. The striking ascending and descending melodic lines, heard throughout the composition, together with the intricate rhythm, form an entertaining whole. The work begins with a sparkling opening in which the strong rhythmic brass passages are surrounded by virtuoso woodwind embellishments. The theme of the energetic opening later returns in the Andante Rubato, but in a very different form. The middle movement develops towards a partial repeat of the opening section which leads quickly into a thundering Presto finale.Duration: 7:30

In the most literal sense: a piece for an occasion. The actual occasion was Jan de Haan's twentieth anniversary as a conductor of the top Dutch brass band, "Soli Deo Gloria" (Leeuwarden). To mark the occasion, the band commissioned the Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to create a surprise piece: without knowledge of the person being celebrated, a suitable source of inspiration was sought for. After some thought the chorale-theme from Camille Saint-Sans organ symphony was chosen, a piece with which Jan de Haan has a special bond. Apart from this chorale, Homage is also based on the names of notes taken from 'Jan de Haan' and 'Soli Deo Gloria', resulting in the tone row: DEGAH. Both elements are combined together and form a grand climax towards the end of the piece when the whole band unites in the Saint Sans' theme.Duration: 5:30

Inspiration was commissioned by the Solothurnischer Kanotonal Musikverband in Switzerland in 1993. The composition begins with an A-theme written in a Phrygian tonality and, after an enormous climax, moves on into a quicker B-section, characterized by the use of wide interval jumps. Then follows the development in which both themes return individually and together. Peace and quiet is restored in the slow middle movement, based on the B-theme. The movement comes to a close with a tutti B-theme, brutally interrupted by fragments from the A-theme. Without a break, the final movement of this contrastive piece develops from these fragments. The theme of this extremely rhythmical closing movement is built up of elements from the A-theme, whilst the B-theme (from the slow middle movement) returns in full once more. Before the piece comes to a close in a resounding fortissimo, the cornet soloist performs the A-theme from the back of the auditorium, to special effect.Duration: 10:00

The story of the origin of Diagram for Symphonic Band is a curious one. Andre Waignein was enjoying a meal together with his great friend Jean-Marie Vivier - representative director of l'Oreal Belgilux and the same man who made the performance of the famous Cantate aux Etoiles, with 750 performers possible. Jean Plaquet, an appreciated associate of both gentlemen was also present.As an acknowledgement, Andre Waignein wanted to dedicate a composition to the band where Mr. Vivier has been chairman for 20 years. In connection with this, Andre Waignein was supposed to receive some extra information about the 120 years old history of this band, which has always been led by a member of the Vivier family. In a flash this history was presented : using a diagram Mr. Vivier drew the power-lines of this more than 100 year old band.And of course, the title was found ! The only thing left to do, was for Andre Waignein to transform this diagram into music.Duration: 13:45
