This major work for wind orchestra incorporates the melodies of nine of the most popular and best-known Chanukah-related songs and hymns. Seven are secular and two are liturgical, and are creatively developed and adapted to take advantage of the various timbres and characteristics of the mature ensemble. The number nine here was intended by the composer to represent the nine candles or lights in the Chanukah m'nora (candelabrum) on the last night of the festival.

Jon Henrik Mario Fjllgren became instantly well-known after his appearance in Sweden's "Got Talent" where he performed "Daniels Joik" written for his recently passed best friend.Fjllgren was born in Cali, Columbia in 1987 but adopted by a Swedish Sami family and lives now as a reindeer herder, singer and composer. Gopak is the first movement of a set of Symphonic Dances written for the Hofstra Unibersity Wind Ensemble, directed by Peter Boonshaft, who commissioned and premiered the work in 2009. Gopak is a tribute to my Polish and Ukrainian roots. My father used to dance traditional Ukrainian dances including the Gopak, and some of my earliest musical memories include the joyful, energetic, and rhythmic feel of those wonderful folk dances.Gopak has a strong feeling of two beats, is accented quite heavily, and is energetic from beginning to end. The melodies are completely original, but the lively feel of the music calls to my mind the energy of the Gopak, notes composer Eric Ewazen.

These three movements for piano and band depict three stages of a musical journey. We set off on a long journey through the world of musical virtuosity in the style of Liszt : grand, lustrous and lyrical. The second stage is a peaceful stroll, the start of a dream. The colours are like a tender caress and the piano sketches transparent arabesques. This splendid impressionistic journey ends in two bright pink drops which evapore just in time before the third and last movement explodes.The last movement is driven forward by a raging rhythm, as relentless as a war-dance. In a confrontation between the soloist and the orchestra all the inner strength of the composer comes to thesurface so that the musicians in the end are breathless... but all the same, no less satisfied.
