The Ecstasy of Gold is the famous theme from the movie The Good, The Bad and The Ugly that leads up to and is heard during the movie's climax, the showdown! The complete soundtrack to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was released in 1966 and sold millions of copies. Since 1983, heavy-metal band Metallica have been opening concerts with Morricone's dramatic and exciting song, The Ecstasy of Gold. In this varied composition, Thomas Doss has used three local folk songs as a symbol of the individual regions: La Montanara (Trentino), Wohl ist die Welt so gro und weit (South Tyrol) and Das Schnste auf der Welt (Tyrol).

This work was commissioned by the concert band Da Capo Leeuwarden from the Netherlands, which was linked with the Dutch postal service PTT up until 1995. Mercury happens to be the messenger of the gods - a kind of mailman, one could say. Yet the composer did not choose the god but the planet Mercury as his source of inspiration for this work in four uninterrupted movements. He created a multifaceted work in which the mysterious celestial body is represented, as well as a number of space missions exploring it. This interesting subject matter guarantees a composition that fascinates from start to finish.

Stampede!!! - Mike Hannickel
STAMPEDE!!! takes us back to an old American West of longhorn cattle-drives, chuck wagons, campfires and trail songs.Based on several authentic cowboy songs, STAMPEDE!!! opens at dawn (birdcalls included) with the "Cowboy's Gettin' Up Holler". Lively fiddle and harmonica motifs and an eloquent scoring of "Good-bye, Old Paint" are just part of this contribution to Grade 3 concert band literature by Mike Hannickel. "The Chisholm Trail" (a true cowboy classic) figures importantly at the beginning and, in a driving re-harmonization, leads to the thrilling conclusion.

Babylon opens with a subtle percussion introduction followed by the statement of the motive by the flute, then resolving into the developmental section utilizing fragments of the motif. Again the percussion sets up a driving introduction to further the developmental section, this time in an allegro setting. Rich harmonies and active percussion lines prevail with this piece, making it one of this composers best works for concert band.
