Modal Miniatures - Paul W. Whear
MODAL MINIATURES is a suite of three short movements of different moods written in the Phrygian mode instead of the traditional major or minor scale. Each movement is based on the chorale-like melody of the first movement. The second movement is a variation of this melody, and the third movement uses the theme in inversion as an ostinato. Dr. Whear wrote MODAL MINIATURES especially for the younger bands so they may experience playing a contemporary work with an authentic scoring in the modal style.

The Four Freedoms for Band - Paul W. Whear
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the only president to be elected to more than two terms. Much of this can be attributed to his skill as an orator as much as to the troubled times in which he served. The four freedoms are, of course, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.

Wind - Darren W. Jenkins
was originally a part of a multi-movement work based on the elements of the universe. It has been re-scored and edited for symphonic band. Through this piece, the composer has tried to musically represent the many facets of wind -- quiet and gentle . . . a wistful and mysterious breeze . . . the flurry of a gusting wind . . . and the calm, somewhat eerie feeling after a storm. Herndon Exaltations (A Celebration of Excellence) - Robert W. Smith
The opening statement, with fanfare flourish, grows as we are led into development that propels with vigor and force. The composer's legendary use of percussion and the total involvement of every instrumentalist has never been more pronounced. Gyrating ostinatos weave an almost hypnotic blanket, and the colors and timbral changes are myriad. This exceptional work sounds far more difficult than it plays! (duration 5:48)

Primordial Overture - Darren W. Jenkins
was written to convey the spirit or essence of a time long, long ago. It begins with a calm, foreboding introduction that builds to a majestic fanfare, then shifts into a lively, almost dance-like section that drives the piece toward a full-bodied brass chorale. The piece ends with a small restatement of the lively section, coming to an energetic conclusion. Sure to evoke various images from throughout the centuries, this work would be ideal for your next concert program.
