Toccata (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Monteverdi, Claudio - De Haan, Jacob

Claudio Monteverdi composed this toccata as an instrumental introduction for the opera L'Orfeo (1607). According to the composer, this introduction should be played three times before the rising of the curtain. This is actually the first overture in the history of opera.)The story of Orfeo, who enchanted nature with his music, is tragic, as he loses his beloved Eurydice and decides to retrieve her from the underworld. On their return journey, one glance back at her is fatal: he loses her for the second time.)This arrangement for wind band is very suitable as a concert opener. The toccata is played three times just like the original. The first time it is played by a quintet consisting of two trumpets and three trombones.)Various ways of performing this toccata are possible. The tension builds up more intensely if the quintet starts off stage. Eventually, these five players join the band, after which the tutti version follows two times. You can also have the brass play from the gallery during the second or third time for a double choir effect.Duration: 2:00

Second Symphony (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Barnes, James

Premiered by the University of Kansas Symphonic Band with Robert E. Foster conducting, this work was presented the 1982 Neil A. Kjos Memorial Award for the most significant contribution to wind band music. It consists of three movements: an "Elegia" in sonata form, "Variazioni Interrotte" (Interrupted Variations), and a "Finale" in classic sonata form concluding in a coda which ends the symphony in a final, dramatic, colorful outburst, the sort of pure musical energy that only a modern symphonic band can produce. Movements: I. Elegia, II. Variazioni Interrotte, III. Finale. Duration: 22.00

Celebration Prelude (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Johnson, Stuart

Celebration Prelude opens with a 30 bar fanfare for brass and percussion and makes this Prelude ideal for a ceremonial or formal occasion, but the piece is equally suitable as a concert-opener. The fanfare theme is then developed in the woodwinds and taken up by the whole wind band, appearing in different guises and with different counter-melodies. Finally, the opening is restated in a much shorter form by the whole band playing fortissimo.

Toccata Festiva (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

Toccata Festiva was commissioned in 1994 by the Dutch Brass Band Championships. The wind band version was made a year later by the composer himself. Historically speaking, the toccata is considered to be one of the first independent instrumental forms for keyboard instruments. Originally the toccata was typically more or less improvised, later this musical form was given a more regulated structure. Both elements are used in the Toccata Festiva: on the one hand the different themes are developed freely, on the other, the piece has an orderly structure. It is in a three part form (quick-slow-quick) and includes both strong rhythmical figures and broad melodic lines. Part of the composition is written in a more or less archaic tone idiom, referring to the period from which the toccata form originates (16th century).Duration: 13:30

Alternances (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Waignein, Andre

In 1984 the Corciano (Italy) Tourist Authority initiated a composition competition for wind band. For this event Andre Waignein composed "Alternances for Symphonic Band", a piece which won him the first prize in the competition. The opening of the work is based on a very tonal foundation. The English horn (or alto saxophone) introduces a rich and warm theme which is immediately taken up by the whole orchestra in a grandiose manner. The subsequent development shows off all the elements of the orchestra to the full. In the second movement, the English horn (or alto saxophone) comes to the fore again. A harmonic change gradually takes us back to the allegro of the first movement. The musical development is here dominated by exuberance, virtuosity and rhythm.Duration: 12:30

Concerto For Timpani And Band (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jacob, Gordon

The nature of the timpani means that musical development is rhythmic rather than tonal. In the first movement, a broad theme is announced by the timpani themselves, and immediately echoed and modified by the full wind band. Material is embroidered by woodwinds and developed by the soloist. The second movement (Adagio) is virtually an aria in which we are left with an expressive mood conjured from the timpani themselves. The last movement is a romp - characteristic use of quasi-folk material is well suited to the band and the rhythmic characteristics of the timpani are highlighted.
