3rd Movement of Portraits of the NorthThe annual Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race between the Alaskan cities of Anchorage and Nome covers 1,049 challenging miles of jagged mountain ranges, dense forests and windswept coastlines. This amazing feat of endurance was the inspiration for Iditarod. In cinematic fashion, the point of view cuts from long-shots to close-ups (from the dog's view to the eagle's), constantly moving forward with a relentless pulse. With a brief respite, a majestic, sweeping theme is introduced and develops. And then - back to the race! With renewed energy, the dogs race the final stretch; the music building and intensifying to the very end. The result of a collaborative commission by the U.S. Air Force Academy Band, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, the U.S. Military Academy Band and the U.S. Naval Academy Band, this major work for band takes its title from a quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson, "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty," and a variation of the West Point motto, "The Long Gray Line." Opening with a tribute to those who have gone before in service to our country, a solemn, noble theme is presented that reappears near the end of the composition. The main body of the work is a series of march-like themes and idiomatic fragments culminating in a glorious full-band fanfare. Following a restatement of the "noble" theme, a stirring coda brings the music to a climactic close.Duration: 8:30

From its softly stroked opening timpani rhythm, setting the mood for a solo horn to emerge and expand as it makes its tonal journey serenely from East to West, the music is never hurried. A dynamic build to high-noon is followed by a return to the quieter sounds as the end of the day is reached and the soft rhythms of the opening are again heard. Altogether the composer has created a wonderfully evocative framework into which performers and listeners can place their own pictures.
