DIVERTIMENTO FOR BAND (Concert Band) - Woolfenden, Guy

ScherzoMany of the principal musical ideas for Divertimento for Band are derived from music composed for a documentary film called Country Camera, which celebrated the work of the earliest photographers who recorded a way of life which vanished at the outset of the first World War.The three movements are played without a break. The Toccata pits a four-note motif (which always appears with its mirror image) against several other derived ideas, including a sour horn (later trumpet) figure, a tiny lyrical passage initiated by a solo alto saxophone, and a more gentle, but still staccato episode. Many polytonal devices keep the four-note motif active. The Aubade contrasts a lyrical pastorale, initiated by a solo flute, with a more intense central section on the brass. The Scherzo finale has three main ideas; a tune for principal bassoon and euphonium of a playful child-like nature, a rushing figure for the woodwinds later developed by the full band, and a solo for trumpet and clarinet, involving a descending scale and a lyrical wide-leaping recovery. The exuberant coda is derived from themes from the previous two movements.The world premiere of Divertimento for Band was given at the conference of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles in Killarney on 13th July 2007 conducted by the composer, and is affectionately dedicated to Keith Allen, Jayne Rollason and Birmingham Symphonic Winds. -GW

This work was commissioned in 1996 by the Arosa Cultural committee and first performed in Arosa in that year. The majestic introduction opens with trombones and euphonium, heralding a legato theme, chorale-like in character. A pair of flutes introduce a new theme. A trumpet introduces a series of highly syncopated solos, which feature many metre changes, and the tempo increases when playful motifs are exchanged between various sections of the band. A solo clarinet introduces an expressive tune. A brass chorale follows, with interruptions from the flute and bassoon, until the clarinet tune is played by the whole band. This reaches a climax and the mood subsides to reach a quiet horn chord. The broad legato tune returns and the excitement increases until the march theme triumphantly returns to full band. This leads to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare and closes the work emphatically. Many Norwegian bands have grown up around factories, but Norwegian factories are often located in the countrysides - by a fjord or lake, by a river or waterfall that provided power for the factory. The factory was the foundation for the existence of the community, but it was also essential for the community's cultural life, choirs, bands etc. (cp. British brass bands and mining). "Celebration for band" tries to give a picture of the environment and life around a band like this, with both factory noise and the natural world (Pastorale), as well as the challenges and development of the band itself. The composition is built up of five connected episodes: - Fanfare and Prologue (concludes with a feeling of the untamed power of the river) - Pastorale I: " At the river" - Intermezzo: " The Factory" (starts with the opening of water for the turbines: snare drum. Factory whistle and bell call to work, and the spinning and weaving machinery starts up.) - Pastorale II: " Summer evening on the fjord." - Finale: " Challenge and Progress"

Guardians of the Waves was commissioned by the Japan Coast Guard Band to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2018. They gave the premiere as part of a 30th anniversary concert on November 8th that year. Set in traditional march form, Guardians of the Waves opens with a short introduction, which leads to the main theme, played initially by the brass and then repeated with a florid woodwind descant. The theme is extended and morphs into a second theme, first played tutti and then quietly repeated by bassoon, tenor sax and euphonium. This leads to a conventional 'bass strain', played twice with varying accompaniments. A quieter trio section follows, delicately scored and featuring the tenor instruments of the band. Taken up by the full band, this leads back to a recall of the introduction and a return to the main two themes, which lead to a triumphal close. Duration: 4.00

Future Celebration was composed on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Royal Socialist Wind Band 'De Toekomst' from Sint-Niklaas (Belgium). In this colourful compostion Kevin Houben succeeds in evoking the bustling textile and cigar industry of the nineteenth and twentieth century in this East Flemish city Sint-Niklaas. After all, these crafts were characteristic for the wealth they brought to the city. Still testimony of this are the 2 unique (niche)museums in Sint-Niklaas: the Knitwear museum and the Pipe and Tobacco museum. Even in times of great crises eg. during the Interbellum the city continued flourishing proving the unique collection of classified art deco houses, amongst others the former People's House, in which the Royal Socialist Wind Band still rehearse. This historic background of Sint-Niklaas and of the Wind Band in particular has been musically presented by Kevin Houben in Future Celebration. The brief, but energetic and powerful opening of the work by the brass instruments gives musical expression to Sint-Niklaas as a prosperous city. After the presentation of a majestic and lyrical theme by the woodwinds an allegro with a cheerful theme takes a look at the future, hopefully looking at the next milestones/ celebrations the city and its orchestra are still expecting in the future. Level 1: Moving Beyond the First Five Notes. Not a warm-up...not a chorale. Skill Stretchers are a way to efficiently move your band beyond the first five notes by working to extend ranges, accidentals and key signatures (in a way that students discover for themselves!). In addition, Skill Stretchers prepare the clarinets to go over the break, introduce lip slurs for brass as well as octave slurs for other woodwinds. Accents, flams, paradiddles and nine-stroke rolls are included for the snare drum. Octaves and arpeggios are introduced to mallet percussion. Skill Stretchers are a supplement to any band method.
