ZOO BALL (Score) - Strachan, Keith
Zoo Ball is score in five parts with various transpositions for each voice. Parts 1 & 2 are the Soprano parts. Part 1 should 'outweigh' part 2 in sound, if not in numbers, as it is often divided. Trumpets/Cornets and Clarinets should be divided accordingly between the parts. Part 3 is the Alto part. It is occasionally scored as an individual part but frequently doubles part 2 or 4. Part 4 is the Tenor part. Part 5 is the Bass part and frequently doubles part 4, either in unison or at an octave lower.The Zoo Ball is a suite of twelve light-hearted pieces for the young wind of brass band by Keith Strachan.It can be seen from the titles that the young player is introduced to a variety of dance rhythms that are both fun to play and enjoyable to listen to.It is scored in five parts (some of which divide in places) so can be played by ensembles of aroung ten players up to full band. When a fuller instrumentation is available, teachers and conductors are encouraged to vary the scoring as appropriate, particularly in repeated sections. Suite on Canadian Folk Songs was written as a Centennial project in 1967 and originally scored for brass band, although the music of the first movement had appeared in Suite from the Monteregian Hills in 1961. Until this edition, the concert band version has remained unpublished, although it has attracted the admiration of many band directors. The suite is in three movements; the first and last being arrangements of French Canadian folk songs, and the middle movement an arrangement of folk song from the province of Newfoundland.

Program NotesGustav Holst's orchestral suite The Planets is perhaps his best known and most popular composition. The them in the central section of the movement Jupiter was adapted by the composer himself to fit the words of the song and has subsequently found its way into use as a hymn tune under the title Thaxted (named after the Essex town where the composer lived).Ray Steadman-Allen's arrangement of the tune for brass band was published by The Salvation Army in 1998. That arrangement has now been transcribed for wind band by Brian Bowen. It can be effectively used as a stand-alone concert item or as a song accompaniment for either choir or audience.

Keep Me Praising - Score and Parts - Andrew Mackereth
Program NotesBased on the song melodies "Give Me Joy in My Heart, Keep Me Praising" and "Praise, My Soul the King of Heaven," the music is largely light-hearted in nature with some florid semi-quaver work overlaying the melodic lines and some interesting interplay between the two selected tunes. We believe that it will have wide appeal both to players and listeners.Andrew Mackareth originally wrote this piece for The Salvation Army's Symphonic Wind Ensemble, but it was first published in a rescored version for brass band. We are please to be able to release it in its original form in this collection of wind band music.
