The opening 'Carousel' takes a leaf out of the American minimalist composers' book and is energetic and resourceful throughout, conjuring up images of a fairground ride that is not too much of an intrepid adventure! The central 'Cameo' presents and re-presents a delicate, highly legato, melisma for the soloist. A somewhat brooding central episode provides both a moment of contrast and the opportunity for the soloist to deliver some free cadenza-type material before returning to the security of the opening calm. The closing 'Charabanc' is a freely developed rondo-style finale embracing influences from jazz and other light music forms. A rapid flourish in 12/8 time opens composer Otto M. Schwarz' first Concerto for trumpet Trumpet Town, written in October 2009. The metric changes that follow affect the pulse rhythmically and melodically, in exciting and unexpected ways. The solo trumpet's displays of technical prowess and bravura alternate with the film-score-like tutti sections of the brass ensemble. The slow, almost elegiac, central section can be performed on the flugelhorn, while the closing reprise demands that both the soloist and the orchestra give of their best as the piece comes to an exciting, colourful, and uplifting finale. Crossroads is an attractive concert work of four interconnected movements, written for the 23rd music festival of the Bernese Cantonal Music Association in Aarwangen, Switzerland. The work has the river Aare to thank for the title of Crossroads -- it was an important trading hub, especially until the age of road building in the 18th century. The lively introduction is followed by a beautiful waltz and a romantic middle section. In the robust finale the orchestra can really roll its sleeves up! 09:15

Includes:Solemn MarchValse TristeFinaleThe thematic material for the first movement, Solemn March, started life as a coronation procession in Trevor Nunn's legendary production of The Revenger's Tragedy, a notorious Jacobean blood and guts play by Cyril Tourneur. Trevor Nunn was also the director of a much loved production of All's Well That Ends Well, starring Dame Peggy Ashcroft and Harriet Walter, from which the Valse Triste comes, featuring a haunting melody tailor-made for the oboe. The last movement, Finale, is a reworking of the curtain call music for Bill Alexander's amazing production of Richard III starring Antony Sher, who memorably played the role on crutches.
