This is an essentially complete transcription of Act IV of Umberto Giordano's tragic opera ANDREA CHENIER. One night before French poet Andrea Chenier's impending execution, his lover Madeleine comes to the prison at St. Lazare and, wishing to die rather than live without him, through bribery manages to exchange places with a young woman who is, like Chenier, scheduled to mount the scaffold the following day. James Curnow fully utilizes his considerable orchestration skill with this immensely powerful transcription. Well performed, the ending is absolutely awe-inspiring. When Time Will Be No More - James Curnow
This work was commissioned in memory of Peter J. Swanson, a trumpet and cornet player who tragically died at the tender age of fourteen. Peter's favorite gospel song, Just a Closer Walk with Thee, has been used as the basis for this piece of contrasts which takes the listener through many styles and moods. The spiritual character of the original song resounds gloriously in When Time Will Be No More.

Purcell's setting of this melody composed by Frenchman Louis Bourgeois has been skillfully arranged for concert band by James Curnow. Commissioned by the Oregon Symphonic Band in Portland, Bridge of the Gods is a dramatic three-movement symphonic poem presenting the colorful legend told by the Native American Klickitatst about the origins of the volcanic mountains of the Cascade range and legendary bridge. The first movement (Saghalie) pays tribute to the powerful chief of all gods and is based on a majestic fanfare theme. The second movement captures the beauty of the maiden Loowit, with haunting flute and English horn solos accompanied by soft chanting voices. The final movement, Tanmahawis, utilizes stark clusters, jagged melodic fragments, and rhythmic percussive energy as it depicts the destruction of the mighty bridge. Constructed between 1915 and 1928, the Tamiami Trail (U.S. Highway 41) provides over 260 miles of scenic Florida beauty between Tampa and Miami. On the Tamiami Trail reflects on this journey, and pays tribute to the Suncoast Concert Band of Sarasota (along the trail) and its director emeritus, Leo Laier. The opening fanfare sets the mood and leads to the energetic first theme. Subsequently a Latin influence is introduced along with an expressive middle theme before returning to the energetic flavor of the opening strains. A dynamic and varied overture for winds. Dur: 6:15
