Cavatina Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Goethe's Faust has already been set to music by various renowned musicians, such as Berlioz, Busoni and Spohr, and indeed Charles Gounod, who built his eponymous opera around the tale. Gounod's Faust is primarily known for its lovely melodies and its beautifully expressive vocal parts and subtle orchestrations. One of the high points of this opera is doubtless this impressive Cavatina ("Salut, demeure chaste et pure"). Wil van der Beek has arranged the Cavatina with the euphonium as solo instrument. 0:04:40

MUSIC FOR AROSA (Prestige Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

This work was commissioned in 1996 by the Arosa Cultural committee and first performed in Arosa in that year. The majestic introduction opens with trombones and euphonium, heralding a legato theme, chorale-like in character. A pair of flutes introduce a new theme. A trumpet introduces a series of highly syncopated solos, which feature many metre changes, and the tempo increases when playful motifs are exchanged between various sections of the band. A solo clarinet introduces an expressive tune. A brass chorale follows, with interruptions from the flute and bassoon, until the clarinet tune is played by the whole band. This reaches a climax and the mood subsides to reach a quiet horn chord. The broad legato tune returns and the excitement increases until the march theme triumphantly returns to full band. This leads to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare and closes the work emphatically. (Grade 5) Performance time 11'01" (Recorded on QPRM138D BREAKING THE CENTURY, Central Band of the Royal Air Force)

RHYTHMATA (FJH Young Band) - Morales, Erik

Spectacular! Rhythm becomes the focus of this work from the opening measures as a large battery of percussion sets the stage for the invigorating opening lines in the winds. Some solo opportunities are offered for your flute, trumpet, and euphonium, supported by rhythmic ostinato figures in the upper woodwinds. Orchestration, texture, and ever changing timbres add to this work's strong rhythmic drive, making this one piece you will never forget!

Serenata - Jan van der Roost

While composing Serenata, Jan Van der Roost didn't focus too much on virtuosity, acrobatics or spectacle. Instead, he wanted to let the solo instrument shine as a melodic and expressive voice. And indeed: the warm sound of the euphonium touches the heart of the audience straight away in the first section with a melodious theme. Then follows a rigaudon, a noble and elegant dance from the Renaissance era. Despite the fact that some of the variations on the main theme require some technique and agility, the overall character mostly remains songful. The composition as a whole builds further on these two musical ingredients, but thanks to a clever alternation of melodic and technical passages, it offers a nice stylistic diversity to the listeners. The band is definitely not 'just accompanying' but fully participates and begins a dialogue with the soloist: both musical partners have their say. The end is more spectacular and sonorous, giving an extra boost of energy to the soloist as well as the band in a grand finale!

    Shamadan Dance - Thomas Doss

This work has been written within the framework of the Obertne project by the Bezirksblasmusikverband Linz-Land (Austria). It was dedicated to Anton Forstner as a thank you for his years of support to wind music in the Linz-Land District. The Shamadan is an old oriental folk dance full of symbolism in which a female dancer - often on the occasion of a wedding - balances a candelabra on her head as a token of spiritual light. In this work, the euphonium takes up the role of the dancer. At the very beginning, the soloist already has the opportunity to shine in an unaccompanied recitative. Next, the soloist and band alternate, and in the course of the work the band also plays an important part with various technical highlights. More variation is created with a solo passage accompanied by percussion and hand claps, culminating beautifully in a grand tutti towards the end of the piece. Challenging music with much to enjoy!

    Pulse - Thomas Doss

Pulse is a solo work for baritone or euphonium and concert band. As the title suggests, this piece is very rhythmic in nature. Pulse represents life and vitality, which also characterises the work. The tempo remains virtually constant throughout the piece. Even during the cadenza, played by the baritone, the pulse of the timpani continues to beat steadily. This work is dedicated to the young soloist Felix Geroldinger of upper Austria.
