Beginning with simple harmonies to depict life on the open range, a distant bass drum roll indicates the beginning of the stampede. Members of the band (and audience) soon join in as the music continues to build. An aleatoric section with temple blocks simulates the sounds of racing horse hooves. Incredibly exciting with a multitude of original sounds!

This innovative work makes use of an optional piano part that is most likely playable by someone already in the band. It was written in honor of Matt Rhodes, a student at John T. Baker Middle (Damascus, MD), who passed away during a battle with spina bifida. It represents his kindness, courage, and determination despite his confinement to a wheelchair. An opening ethereal section and chorale moves into an exciting portrayal of life which concludes with a humorous ending that was very characteristic of Matt. A very musical composition that teaches much more than notes. (4:50)

This imaginative work was conceived as the underscore to a fictional fireworks show. The opening section suggests the massive fireworks bursting in grand fashion as the music thrives on each explosion, feeding on energy in a frenzy of excitement. As one final firework explodes to blanket the sky in lights, the second section begins. This section is very impressionistic, depicting a stunning laser show with an array of colors and images. The final section is based on an infectious dance in 7/8 time. This musical celebration is both driving and playful, signifying the return of the fireworks. A coda section includes huge fanfares, forceful rhythms, and metallic sounds that welcome the grand finale while building to a dramatic conclusion. Absolutely amazing!
