This latest installment with Canzonique Music is a wonderfully inspiring work. It was commissioned by Jerry Peel, professor of horn at the University of Miami, and was recorded by Peel and the University of Miami Wind Ensemble; Gary Green, Director. Pele was programmed for the College Band Directors National Conference in Baltimore (2004) with guest artist Philip Munds, Principal Horn of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Towson University Symphonic Band, with the composer conducting. Pele was inspired by the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire (or Volcano Goddess) by the same name. She was passionate, volatile, and capricious. This lyrical work is an emotional rollercoaster in which we experience a glimpse of her personality - from her quiet moments to her most volatile.

Premiered at Carnegie Hall, this minimalistic fanfare celebrates SpaceShipOne, the first privately manned spacecraft to exceed an altitude of 62 miles twice within two weeks. The three sections explore the launch to space, reaching the apogee (weightlessness), and return to the atmosphere. Punctuated by incredible brass fanfares and woodwind flourishes, the entire work is a bundle of energy from start to finish, and is the perfect opener for any concert. Monumental!

This is a sensitive, technically simple melody treated in an andante tempo and 3/4 meter. Its sparse scoring, in spots, contrasts nicely with the legato ensemble statements that predominate. Percussion is used to enhance the musicality of the work rather than to serve as a pulse. It is a terrific work to teach elements of musicality.

This captivating composition was inspired by that "breakthrough" moment when people start to realize there is much more to life than they originally thought. Opening with a woodwind ostinato, the horns introduce the melody that becomes the focus of the work. The pace continues through a beautiful lyrical section that soon explodes into a triumphant ending of brass under a flourishing woodwind ostinato. An ideal concert opener.
