Jingle Bell Tones - Brian Balmages

This very easy holiday fanfare is ideal for teaching accents to your ensemble. The "bell tone" motif occurs several times throughout the work. As the title suggests, the focus of the work is Jingle Bells, though hints of other favorites are heard at the beginning and the end. Three supplemental exercises help students learn the piece, and the exercises themselves can be played together as duets or a trio to encourage practice outside of school. Fabulous sounds with only six notes!

    Starscapes - Brian Balmages

This three-movement programmatic work is based on various constellations and their Greek mythologies. Movements include Orion (The Hunter), Draco (The Dragon), and Pegasus (The Winged Horse). The opening movement paints a picture of the night sky before introducing the mighty Orion. The second movement depicts the fiery dragon and its fierce triple row of teeth. (An optional lion's roar enhances the movement.) The final movement takes listeners on a flight with Pegasus, beginning with a fast gallop on the ground before the magnificent animal takes flight. The movements can be performed separately or as a whole. Absolutely stunning!

    Smithsonian Suite - Brian Balmages

This 4-movement multicultural suite provides a wealth of teaching and performance opportunities, especially at the beginning level. Each movement is based on a Smithsonian National Museum in Washington D.C. (Natural History, American Indian, African Art, and Air and Space). These movements can easily be performed separately. In addition to cross-curriculum teaching, the opening theme is slightly altered in each movement, teaching the concept of variations. Strongly consider this new work.

    Stampede - Brian Balmages

This innovative work uses optional audience participation to create the sound of a massive stampede moving through the concert hall. Beginning with simple harmonies to depict life on the open range, a distant bass drum roll indicates the beginning of the stampede. Members of the band (and audience) soon join in as the music continues to build. An aleatoric section with temple blocks simulates the sounds of racing horse hooves. Incredibly exciting with a multitude of original sounds!

Rise of the Bladesmith - Brian Balmages

Conjuring images of a master craftsman forging the perfect sword, this dramatic work portrays the intense heat and relentless pounding as the blade begins to take shape. A reference to the Dies Irae conveys the image of glowing metal, which almost seems to resemble molten lava. With no eighth notes in the wind parts, this piece is truly accessible to the youngest of musicians!

Shrine of the Fallen - Brian Balmages

Written in response to the tragic events in Kiev in 2014, this music draws on the old Ukrainian folk song Plyve Kacha, which became an anthem for many protestors as a symbol of national pride while also mourning the fallen. Described by the composer as Arabian Dances meets Moscow, 1941, the music is incredibly powerful yet introspective. Quotes of the Ukrainian National Anthem add to the intensity of the music, which features the instrumentalists singing in 4-part harmony at the very end of the piece. Absolutely stunning.

    Gettysburg - Brian Balmages

Using many effects to recreate the events at the Battle of Gettysburg, this piece is perfect for discussing historical perspective (included in the notes). A slow, mysterious opening leads into a depiction of the battle. A short, aleatoric section simulates a huge cannon bombardment with drums and whistling. A great way to utilize percussion while providing many opportunities for the rest of the band as well. Consider this strongly for your programming needs. (2:45)
