A technique much employed by Verdi is to alternate main scenes of a drama with others which allow the listener to relax temporarily. These moments are often entrusted to the choir (as in the case of the well-known Rataplan in La forza del destino). In Trovatore, the soldiers' chorus precedes the scene of the capture of the gypsy woman Azucena by Conte di Luna's men. The soldiers are about to attack the fortress of Castellor in which Manrico (the troubadour) and Leonora, together with many other rebels, have found shelter. The very easy-going choir is in blunt contrast to the following scene in which Ferrando, the loyal squire of Conte di Luna, recognises the old gypsy woman. This recognition marks the beginning of wicked developments for all protagonists in this drama.Duration: 3:30

The lyrics to Der Mond ist Aufgegangen (The Moon Is Risen) come from Matthias Claudius, one of Germany's best-known poets. The 1779 poem with the original title Abendlied (Evening song) was set to music by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz and has become perhaps the most famous Abendlied in the German-speaking world. Johann de Haan has created a delightful arrangement of this poignant melody. The wind orchestra can optionally be accompanied by a choir (Dutch and German texts are provided).Duration: 3:30

The Latin word "Introitus" means 'entry'. Originally, this was a psalm sung to accompany the entrance of a bishop, priest or celebrant into the church. Ring in the holidays with this famous Christmas carol, Ding Dong! Merrily on High. The tune first appeared as a French dance in the 1500's. The lyrics were written by George Ratcliffe Woodward and published in 1924 in The Cambridge Carol-Book. More recently, Sir David Willcocks made an arrangement for the second book of Carols for Choirs, on which this arrangement for Concert/Wind Band is based. His original arrangement was in the key of B major, which has been modified to B-flat major to better accommodate the instruments of the band. This represents one of the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

Christmas Night is John Rutter's setting of a traditional French Carol, with words by John Rutter. It became the theme of one of his Christmas albums, focusing on the central event of the Christmas story, the birth at Bethlehem, and on the characters in that story: the angels, the shepherds, the wise men, and the mother with her child. This arrangement is written for combined Concert Band and Chorus, but may be performed by Band alone. The arrangement is technically very easy, and is a showpiece of the colours and textures of the families of band instruments.

Down by the riverside is a spiritual that was sung by slaves in the South as a work song. It dates back to before the American Civil War. John Rutter's lively arrangement of this barnstorming American folk-song builds up from a quiet opening to a triumphant conclusion. This arrangement is a faithful adaptation of the original orchestration for chorus and orchestra, but it is arranged so that it may be performed by band alone. The style is an authentic toe-tapping early jazz creation that relates to the 'jitterbug' era, and the band arrangement is complete with an optional jazz clarinet solo as well as a rousing chorus by the sax section. The piano part is cued if needed. This is a perfect opportunity to get the entire band 'swinging', and could even entice a 'One mo' time!' finale.
