Something Borrowed, Something Blue (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
This is a little salute to the wonderful music of Duke Ellington, taking Mood Indigo as its model. Something Borrowed, Something Blue will allow the young band to approach this masterpiece's laid-back style, using chords and harmonies that they may be hearing for the first time. The Harbour: Sunday Morning (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
The Harbour: Sunday Morning was commissioned by the Jersey Instrumental Service for the Jersey Youth Wind Band. The history of the Channel Islands is inextricably linked to the sea and this determined the theme for this composition. The composer is intrigued by man's fascination with elements of nature (such as the sea, mountains, deserts and deep space), which are both beautiful and dangerous. Bring the power of the sea to your concert with this truly descriptive piece.Duration: 7:00

Parade of the Clockwork Soldiers (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
This piece was inspired by the composer watching his young son, Benny, playing 'soldiers' with his collection of teddy bears - how appropriate! But it made him think of the many character pieces which take the form of a 'toy march', the most notable examples being by Haydn, Tchaikovsky and Leon Jessel. Parade of the Clockwork Soldiers is in the form of a 'patrol' (starting and ending quietly with a louder middle) and aims to represent a band marching past the listener. In fact, where the hall layout permits it, it could be possible to add a little choreography to the piece, starting and ending with only a few instruments on stage.Duration: 4:30

Mexican Holiday (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Whilst making no claims to be stylistically authentic, this little piece aims to capture the infectious spirit of mariachi, a word whose origins are lost in the mists of time, but which describes not only the performers (on guitars, vihuelas, violins, trumpets and harp) but also the music itself. Their music speaks of love, passion, politics, life in the country and revolutionary heroes but is unerringly uplifting in style and immediately recognisable as the spirit of Mexico. A chance to add that Spanish flavour to your concerts.Duration: 1:30

Rockin' Trumpets (Trumpet Section Feature with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
The history of rock and roll can be traced back as far as the musical influence of the first African slaves to arrive in North America. The style borrows heavily from rhythm and blues and early rock stars such as Ike Turner, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley had a huge influence through the newly-invented juke box and liberated the youth of the day by giving them a music of their own. Rockin' Tumpets gives the young band a chance to rock and roll with the trumpets taking the lead. Treat your trumpets to this lively section feature.Duration: 2:30

Soft-shoe Shuffle (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Dating from the first decades of the 20th century and originating in vaudeville and the music hall, the soft-shoe shuffle was danced by tap dancers, wearing soft-shoes instead of their normal tap shoes. In this usually comic dance, the shoes were rubbed on the surface of the stage producing a characteristic 'swish'. Soft-shoe Shuffle can be made into a percussion feature by bringing the sandpaper blocks to the front of the stage - with added choreography, if required! A wonderful piece of musical humour for your concerts.Duration: 2:45

O Holy Night (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Adam, Adolphe - Sparke, Philip
Adolphe Adam (1803-56) is perhaps best known for his classical ballet, Giselle, but it is his Cantique de Nol (popularly known in the English-speaking world as 'O Holy Night', the opening line of its translated lyrics) that has made him a household name during the Christmas season.Duration: 3:45

Harlequin (Euphonium Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Harlequin was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, euphonium virtuoso David Childs. The piece takes as its inspiration the happy and sad masks which symbolise the Commedia dell?Arte (which features Harlequin as one of its main characters) and comprises two movements, a slow modal ballad followed by a frenetic faster movement. A fantastic showpiece for euphonium and band.Duration: 9.00

A Repton Fantasy (Flexible Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Parry, Hubert C. - Sparke, Philip
for Bb or Eb SoloistSir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) belongs to a forgotten generation of English composers who are often over-shadowed by Sir Edward Elgar, and the result has been that much of their work is little played or forgotten. In Parry's case, he is now mostly remembered for his hymn tunes, such as Jerusalem and Repton, both marvellous melodies, of course. The latter first appeared in Parry's oratorio Judith and was adapted as a hymn tune after the composer's death. The solo part can be played by a trumpet, clarinet or alto saxophone and will give your chosen soloist a chance to shine.Duration: 3:00
