Sergei Prokofiev's The Stone Flower (opus 118) is his eighth and last ballet, composed between 1948 and 1950. His most famous ballets are Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella and Le Pas d'Acier.The Stone Flower is based on a Russian folk tale from the Ural Mountains. The premiere of the work took place in 1954, one year- after the dead of the composer. The Year 1941 was composed during the second World War. Prokofiev, along with other composers, was evacuated to the Caucasus when Germany started attacking the Soviet Union in 1941. It was under such circumstances that Prokofiev began work on this symphonic suite. He was working on his epic opera War and Peace and the String Quartet No. 2 at the same time. It is an orchestral suite in three movements, a poignant and evocative musical depiction of a tumultuous period in history. The composer described these three movements as follows: I. In Battle - "a scene of heated battle, heard by the audience sometimes as though far away and sometimes as though on the actual battlefield."II. At Night - "a poetic night scene, disturbed by the tension of impending conflict. III. For the Brotherhood of Man - "a triumphant lyrical hymn to victory and the brotherhood of peoples."

The teachers under whom rpd Balzs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift rpd Balzs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Ngy kp (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given the title Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Indul (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character. This music is avowedly akin to the ballet music of Prokofiev. This choice series of four character pieces is crowned by Jtk (Play) in which conveying the effect of the mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other may be more technically demanding, but is well worth the effort!
