On being asked by James Gourlay, one of the world's leading tuba players, to write this work the composer was given a free hand to write whatever he wanted. A rare request in a commission! To start he created a note-row from t he musical letters of James' name giving a minor seventh chord and an added flattened fifth. From this point everything went into the pot bringing out simplet tunes, cadenzas, and even muti-phonics! A real challenge for the performer but joy for the listener! Score & Parts. The concerto is in three movements, following the usual quick-slow-quick pattern: Allegro deciso, Lento e mesto, Allegro giocoso. The first has a sonata form shell with two contrasting themes, the first rhythmic in character, the second lyrical. There is a reference made in the development section to the opening theme of Vaughan Williams's tuba concerto, but this merges into the other material in the development section. The second movement unfolds a long cantabile melody for the soloist, which contrasts to a ritornello idea. The central climax of the movement triumphantly heralds the main theme from the band. The last movement is in rondo form, alternating the main theme with two episodes. The first of these is a broad sweeping tune, the second is jazz-like in style. After a short cadenza, reference is made to the opening of the concerto, and the work ends with a triumphal flourish. Duration: 18 mins. American Grade 4.5

This piece explores the life span of a tornado and which instrument is better suited for that than just the tuba? The piece has three movements: I - Impatient Storm Cell II - Cumulus Clouds III - Multiple Vortex Tornado This piece presents challenges in dynamics and articulation, as well as in the interplay with the soloist. The piece is based on a scale of seven pitches (as 'Tornado' has seven letters) and is notated as a concert Eb major scale with three accidentals. Only these seven notes are played throughout the piece. Playing time appx. 10 minutes.

Tuba Libre! was commissioned by Eirik Gjerdevik, Tubaist with the Norwegian Navy Band Bergen and also widely sought after as a soloist and conductor.The work is the first major work the composer wrote for Brass Band.Eirik Gjerdevik recorded the work on his album "Eirik the Viking", a recording which also feature Stavanger Brass Band conducted by Morten E. Hansen. The album was released by Lawo Classics in 2014 (LWC 1064).The version for Concert Band was also premiered by Eirik Gjerdevik, this time conducted by the composer.
