Symfoni nr. 1 'Fatum' - Symphony No. 1 "Fate" - Johan Halvorsen
Johan August Halvorsen (1864-1935) was born in Drammen and played violin and several brass instruments. He played in both orchestra and wind bands and in 1881 he became a student at Brigademusikken in Oslo. After a brilliant violinist career he proved himself talented as a conductor and composer. From 1899 he became conductor and composer at the National Theatre, where he wrote many of his most famous works. It was in this period in 1924 he wrote Fatum. Fatum means destiny and like Beethoven he opens the symphony with a motif he uses in all four movements. This work shows that Halvorsen was a great composer and a traditionalist.

The Hunter Becomes the Hunted - Emil Kristoffersen Børø
The horn is often associated with hunting. Hunters in earlier times used horns to signal their hounds during the hunt. In this piece the roles have been switched, and the horn is the one being hunted. The soloist has to escape the hunting low brass and gunshots of the band. The piece was originally composed for horn player Mats Pettersen and The Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in 2013, and was transcribed for horn player Bartosz Wawruch and Bergen Symphonic Band to be performed at the Brass Wind Festival in Bergen in 2017.

Ancient Desert Drone - Henry Cowell
Ancient Desert Drone was composed for Orchestra in 1940 at the request of Percy Grainger, who encouraged the idea of using a single pitch drone throughout the work (similar to Grainger's own The ImmovableDo) and to whom the piece is dedicated. While the work suggests an Eastern charm with its distinctive mode and primitive rhythms, Cowell himself stated there was no particular programmatic intent. This transcription for bandis an exotic and welcome addition to the repertoire for Winds. Dur: 5:00Recorded by the Trinity University Symphonic Wind Ensemble - James Worman, conductor. Suite - Boudewijn Cox
Suite for symphonic wind band is a rich orchestral piece that taxes the musicians to the utmost. The first part starts with a lyric melody in the French horn section, to be taken over by the full orchestra, ending in a kind of "anarchistic entrada". The second part starts with a transparently orchestrated polyphonic web, slowly passing into a richly arranged wave like movement that stops suddenly, leading to the third part's "attaca" start. This third part is a fragile "adagio con tenerezza". The finale is extremely virtuous and feriocious. It is a musical expression of anger, fear and despair.

Postcard From Baghdad - Dirk Brossé
Sir Dirk Bross, music director at the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, is a versatile composer of orchestral and symphonic repertoire, chamber music, film & musical. His compositions are performed worldwide by the most prominent orchestras and soloists. About the new series of 10 "Musical Postcards" for wind band, Dirk says the following: "Composing is a commitment; it is my life's mission. For me composing means creating a vacuum around myself and allowing myself to be submerged by impressions. It is a continual struggle between fantasy and reality, between dream and reality. Out of chaos of sounds and emotions I try to order my thoughts by juggling shreds of melodies, original chords, striking sound colours and alternating rhythms. Melody, harmony, rhythm and sound colours are finally balanced to generate a harmonious universe. This series of ten 'Musical Postcards' are a reflection of my travels, thoughts, discoveries and musical career so far, which has brought me around the globe. I look forward to you joining me on this voyage of discovery..."
