Variations on a Pentatonic Theme Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Rob Goorhuis wrote his Variations on a Pentatonic Theme (1987) for the Royal Wind band of Thorn, conductor Jan Cober. The work consists of five character variations on a pentatonic (five-tone) theme. The basic elements of the theme are the descending minor third and the descending major second, which in the course of the composition build up to a broad melody, unfolding itself in the final variation. The first variation resembles minimal music in its repetitive rhythmic motives. The second variation is explosive in character: rapid broken chords provide a background for soft solo motifs. The third variation is a quiet intermezzo on a slow chorale theme, creating two contrasting moods. The fourth variation is a light-hearted scherzo. The final variation is a brilliant finale with all the necessary ingredients, or, in the composer's words, "the works" Testpiece WMC 2005 Concert Division. 18:00

After the somewhat bold introduction, the first theme brings a simple sense of comfort. The trumpets then stand proudly with a feeling of strength and confidence. After a climax we are led to a slightly contemplative section. The ending is filled with a recapitulation of the main theme accompanied with the music box. Based on Personent hodie (On this day earth shall ring), this is a short piece imagining a torchlight Yuletide procession (perhaps bearing the traditional roasted wild boar), using a well-known Christmas melody from the large collection of music compiled in the 16th century called Piae Cantiones (1582). A Walk in the Park for Walter was composed for Avenllaneda's John F. Kennedy High School Band. This composition features dynamic brass, sustained chords, sweeping & energetic woodwind lines, and a recurring 3-note motif, in addition the the intuitive musical phrasing for which Strommen is known. The vibrant fast sections are contrasted by a waltz in the middle of the piece, which is then followed by a wonderfully bold ending.
