    Terracotta Warriors - Scott Watson

This original work was inspired by the "spirit army" of 6,000 clay statues created in the third century B.C. for the tomb of the first emperor of China. A brief, plaintive folk chant summons the army from their centuries-old sleep. The warriors respond, with musical representations of uniform marching and weapons display. (4:25)

    Kinetic Energy - Larry Clark

Kinetic energy is defined as the energy of constant motion. Larry Clark represents this idea with a near constant 8th-note pulse throughout his supercharged piece. Though the piece ends in B flat major, the main idea is in the Lydian mode on E flat. Kinetic Energy is Clark at his most incisive and the scoring is apt and colorful.

    Four Pictures - Árpád Balázs

The teachers under whom rpd Balzs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift rpd Balzs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Ngy kp (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given the title Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Indul (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character. This music is avowedly akin to the ballet music of Prokofiev. This choice series of four character pieces is crowned by Jtk (Play) in which conveying the effect of the mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other may be more technically demanding, but is well worth the effort! Norwegian Vignettes - Nancy H. Seward

Another effective composition from this master teacher, Norwegian Vignettes contrasts the majestic marcato style of the opening with the light staccato of the B section. It also offers contrast in dynamic levels and tone colors, along with a study of the dotted 8th/16th pattern. This programmatic selection will enhance any concert setting.

Prairie Dance - Gary D. Ziek

Prairie Dance was composed for the Emporia State University High School Honors Band in Emporia, KS. The piece begins with an introduction, which is notated to be played "With Spirit". This leads to the body of the piece, which utilizes an ABA form. The A sections are fast and joyful in nature, with the B section being more reflective and wistful. The vastness, beauty and loneliness of the open prairie are portrayed as the piece unfolds.
