£57.50Hambone - Libby Larsen
Libby Larsen used three inspirations from her life to write Hambone. First, she was inspired by early rock 'n roll rhythms, particularly those written by Bo Diddley, from her high school days when she had her own rock band. The second inspiration is the African-American tradition of hamboning - clapping and slapping to create fun, new rhythms, and finally the melodies of the traditional cakewalk, reminiscent of Debussy's Golliwog's Cakewalk. The curriculum explores all three of these inspirations with various musical and visual examples, and explains African American oral traditions, linking this piece to places all over the world, from Ghana and the Ivory Coast to Paris, France. Mixed Bag Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Mixed Bag' stands midway between a collection and a hotchpotch. It is a colourful compilation of four completely different pieces, each with its own specific character. The first part is called 'Tanguillo' : as its name suggests, this Spanish dance is related to the Tango. In the next part, 'Maybe next time ....' a repeated bass line (Passacaglia) can be heard, first solo, but thereafter gradually the other instruments join in. The third part forms a huge contrast - did the former part have a Baroque atmosphere, 'Rock Hard' seems to have come directly from the Rock 'n Roll era, reminding us of stars such as Bill Haley and Elvis Presley. The finale is a cheerful, inciting movement called 'Gypsy Dance'. 07:30

Dance of the Whale was commissioned by the Spanish music foundation, Musica et Orbi, at the instigation of its president, Frank De Vuyst. It is part of a unique project which involved nine composers each writing a short movement, describing ananimal of the composers' choice, to form a suite called Bestiarium. A consortium of bands around the world helped to fund the project and the world premiere of the suite took place in March 2013 in Medell n, Colombia. Dance of the Whaleuses the tenor instruments of the band to describe a lazy and graceful dance by a blue whale and is dedicated to endangered species around the world.

Fanitullen is a lively, beautiful 'Sl?tt', i.e. an old Norwegian melody which is played on a traditional 'Hardingfele' (Hardanger fiddle).Because of its violent rhythm and exciting character, playing a Fanitullen for a long time was considered improper. It was believed that a person playing this melody would come under the influence of the devil. El Cid was the name of the legendary knight and folk hero Rodrigo D az de Vivar Cameador, the man who never lost a duel. After a typically Spanish opening, a slower section follows in which the composer makes reference to Albinoni'sAdagio and to the slow movement from Joaqu n Rodrigo's Concierto d'Aranjuez. The music is whipped up with Spanish passion at the close, and castanets are a must! The solo part can be played by trumpet, flugelhorn, cornet oralto saxophone and is also available in a simplified version.

Cariad, a Welsh word meaning 'true love', 'great love', is a composition by Welsh composer Gareth Glyn, featuring six folksongs based on the theme of love: Dacw Nghariad (There's my love); Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn (Watching the White Wheat); Mae Nghariad I'n Fenws (My Love is a Venus); Y Deryn Pur (The Message Bird); Tra Bo Dau (While Two Remain); Hen Ferchetan (The Old Spinster). Originally composed for Children's Choir and Orchestra, the composer then revised it for orchestra, on which this arrangement for Concert/Wind Band has been adapted. The contemporary setting brings a special lift and expression of joy to this unique folksong setting.
