Sight-Reading Studies - James Curnow
An important addition to the ground-breaking Essentials of Musicianship Series from Curnow Music Press! You have probably found that if you rely entirely on your method book and performance pieces for teaching and reinforcement, many aspects of musicianship do not receive the focus that they should have. Method books have notoriously little reinforcement material because they try to cover so much with so little book space. The Essentials Series allows you to select the areas that your band needs work on and provides a great deal of reinforcement for those critical skills. If you are not yet familiar with this series, you have just discovered a tremendousteaching resource! Look at a score for Sight-Reading Builders and notice the comprehensive instructions for most effective use. Teach your band to read style and well as notes and rhythms! A wonderful resource!

Forest of Tranquility - Randy Navarre
Forest of Tranquility is our newest work in our very beginning band series. Like all of our compositions in this performance level, your students can play this within the first few months of study. Thus, getting in a very early concert and keeps kids in the band program. This is a gentle sounding song starting in a minor mode, moving to its relative major and back to minor, a sound not often heard for a beginning band at this level. Clarinets do not cross the break. The 1st trumpet's highest note is Bb.

The Painted Desert - Philip Sparke
The south-western US state of Arizona has more than its fair share of stunning landscapes, natural phenomena and National Monuments. Best known is the Grand Canyon, but there are also numerous deserts, a petrified forest, extinct volcanoes and the huge Sunset Crater. Not surprisingly, it has featured as the backdrop to many Western movies. The Painted Desert is a narrow, crescent-shaped arc about 160 miles long which begins near the Grand Canyon and varies in width from 10 to 35 miles. It is largely void of vegetation and years of erosion by wind and rain have exposed sedimentary layers of rock up to 250 million years old. Chemical differences in the various layers result in aneffect not unlike a multicoloured layer cake with contrasting hues of red, orange and pink, blue, grey and lavender creating a silent and barren landscape which looks like it has been hand-painted. As with much of the planet's stunning landscapes all the observer can do is stand and stare.

Elisabeth - Sylvester Levay
The world premiere of the musical Elisabeth took place in Vienna on September 3, 1992. From the great acclaim with which the musical was received, it became clear that the life of the Empress of Austria still appeals to the imagination. Although Elisabeth's life (1837-1898) as an Empress has a fairy-tale-like beginning, it takes a gloomy turn. In this production, Luigi Lucheni, the man who finally takes her life, tells her story. Death plays a major role throughout Elisabeth's life. In the musical, an equally mysterious and attractive man portrays the phenomenon of death, seducing her to the realm of death time after time. Elisabeth's life resembles a fairy tale when shemarries the Emperor Franz Joseph at the age of sixteen. Her mother-in-law, Archduchess Sophie, does not make it easy on Elisabeth. But it is life itself that puts the Empress to the test. First, her youngest daughter dies. Then, not long after her son Rudolf is born, her happiness is clouded when her mother-in-law decides she must take pity on him. After her husband's unfaithfulness and Sophie's death, Elisabeth is so disillusioned that she chooses a travelling existence without realizing her husband and her son, Rudolf, miss her. Rudolf's loneliness is one of the reasons he commits suicide. The accumulation of disappointments in Elisabeth's life almost drives her into the arms of Death. In the end, however, it is Lucheni who kills her.

Raging Machines - Brian Balmages
While not specifically programmatic, this aggressive work paints a picture of mechanical rage in a rollercoaster of sound. From the opening dissonant chords to the exuberant themes and wildly aggressive harmonies, this work is certain not to disappoint! A large battery of percussion helps recreate the sound of clanging metal as the work drives forward in a whirlwind of fury. Captivating and relentless!

Tango for Two Left Feet (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - White, Terry
The tango is a very graceful and precise style of Latin dance where the couple performing needs to be totally in sync with each other, as well as the music. Tango for Two Left Feet by Terry White depicts what happens when an inexperienced couple is not in sync, drops a beat or step, and are not in time with the music. In this case, the music drops the beat for them! This composition, in addition to providing rhythmic uniqueness, will allow young musicians the opportunity to learn and be familiar with the most common rhythms associated with the tango style. It also contains some unexpected harmonic twists at times, as well as contemporary harmonies that will provide additional interest to the composition. Duration: 2.45

Mysteries of the Horizon (Trumpet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Clarke, Nigel
Mysteries of the Horizon (After Four Rene Magritte Surrealist Paintings)A Concerto for Trumpet and Wind OrchestraMysteries of the Horizon is written and dedicated to Harmen Vanhoorne, and Matthew J George and the University of St Thomas Wind Ensemble. The subject material for my concerto are four surrealist paintings by the Belgian artist Rene Magritte (1898-1967). The movements are named after four of his paintings with the following titles:The Menaced AssassinThe Dominion of LightThe Flavour of LightsThe Discovery of FireAs part of my research I visited the Magritte Museum in Brussels to absorb myself in his works. Mysteries of the Horizon is not programmatic, but I have tried to colour each movement with the atmosphere of each Magritte painting. The work is unusual in that there are four movement, not the standard three. The second movement, The Dominion of Light, acts as a light relief between the first and third movements. The concerto gives much opportunity to the soloist to demonstrate different aspects of the instrument.- Nigel Clarke

Christ is the Morning Star (Concert Band with Optional Choir - Score and Parts) - Rutter, John - Noble, Paul
Christ is the morning star is sheer beauty in its simplicity and message. Whether performing this arrangement with or without a chorus, the beauty remains. The choral part is included in the score as reference, but is not included in the set. Choral parts may be purchased through Oxford University Press or their affiliates. The arrangement is written so that it is playable without a chorus. This piece brings John Rutter's music to everyone because it is technically not demanding. There are sufficient doubling of parts so that even the smallest ensemble can experience the music and bring its lovely essence to an appreciative audience.
