This three movement work by the world renowned composer Philip Sparke is based on traditional folk songs, in particular popular children's songs, from Singapore.The first movement is based on Gelang Sipaku Gelang, a well-loved folksong which has become associated with the Geylang area and is a song about community spirit and people living together in harmony. The slower second movement uses Di-Tanjung Katong, a song which is popular with childrens' choirs and third the movement uses two traditional melodies - Lenggang Kangkung which tells of the graceful swaying of watercress in the rice paddy fields and Munnaeru Vaalibaa. "Black Pointed Hats" in D minor sets the scene, with the bass instruments playing an accented form of the tone row. Note clusters and chromatic movement help to create the mysterious sound palette for listeners to let their imagination run riot. The contrary motion in the upper woodwinds at the beginning of "Spells" gives a mesmerizing effect. The third movement, "Flying Broomsticks," evokes the image of young wizards flying around, using chromatic runs and various accented sections where the flying is not so smooth. Both themes used in this movement combine to form a grand flypast!

Jeremiah Clarke (c. 1674-1707) belongs to the generation of English composers following that of Henry Purcell. Not much is known about his early life, but by 1685 he was a chorister of the Chapel Royal, a group of liturgical musicians attached to the court. He held the post of organist at Winchester College from 1692 but later returned to London as Master of the Choristers at St Paul's Cathedral. The Prince of Denmark's March is perhaps his best-known work and was originally written for harpsichord, although Clarke later included it in a collection of pieces for wind instruments.Duration: 3:00
