Golliwogg's Cakewalk - Claude Debussy / arr. Andrew Balent

This excellent arrangement for young band captures all the musical intent of Debussy's original while being extremely accessible to young bands. Andrew Balent has edited the piece so that it remains largely in tact, yet holds student and audience interest throughout. A great choice for a light concert piece that also happens to be a classic.

    Eagle Pass - Max Williams

Craigellachie!, a Scottish battle cry, is the name given to the spot near Eagle Pass, which cuts through Canada's Rocky Mountains, where the last spike of the Trans-Canada railway was pounded into the earth. This piece is an attempt to express, in music, the indomitable spirit of all those thousands who struggled so hard, not to build a railway, but a nation.

    Ceremonious - Ryan Meeboer

"Ceremonious" is a processional piece that focuses mainly on the first seven notes learned in most method books. It is a great way to teach young performers about articulations, relationships between the sections, and the roles of those sections in a band. All parts are easy to learn, so less time can be spent on learning the music, and more time can be focused on dynamic contrast and balance, articulations, and tone control.

North Shore Overture - David Marlatt

North Shore Boulevard is a street in Burlington, Canada near where settlers landed their ships and established their family roots in the early 1800s. Times were tough but so were they. This piece is split into sections depicting the people and the events that occurred at that time. Full of character and interesting rhythms, this unique overture would work equally well for concert or contest use. This is a great piece to expose developing players to lots of syncopation and some "extra flat notes" not commonly used for music at this level. North Shore Overture is an excellent end of year piece or something to start off a higher level band as their first piece of the year. (2:25)

Modal Miniatures - Paul W. Whear

MODAL MINIATURES is a suite of three short movements of different moods written in the Phrygian mode instead of the traditional major or minor scale. Each movement is based on the chorale-like melody of the first movement. The second movement is a variation of this melody, and the third movement uses the theme in inversion as an ostinato. Dr. Whear wrote MODAL MINIATURES especially for the younger bands so they may experience playing a contemporary work with an authentic scoring in the modal style.

Sonata for Clarinet No.2 in Eb - Score and Parts - Johannes Brahms

This clarinet sonata was composed in 1894 for clarinetist Richard Mu?hlfeld. This was an interesting time in Brahms' life as he vowed he would retire from composing in 1890 but after he heard a performance of the Weber clarinet concerto No.1 and the Mozart clarinet quintet he so admired the soloist that he felt he should come out of retirement and compose 2 clarinet sonatas for him. These were completed in 1894 and first performed in a private concert in September of that year. These 2 sonatas were the last chamber pieces he composed before his death.
