March of the Magical Toys - Robert W. Smith
"'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Santa had dropped through the chimney with care, hoping the children would be up the stairs. He placed all the toys round the tree with delight, and wiggled his nose at the stroke of midnight. The toys came alive and marched round and round, singing and dancing to holiday sounds." So begins Robert W. Smith's program notes. Need more be said? Here is that "Smith creativity" at its finest! Greensleeves
A unique and vibrant setting of the well-known melody. The first known reference to "Greensleeves" goes back to 1580. Since that date the melody has had myriad uses. However, none are so pleasing as its holiday connection. Paul Cook provides a version that is almost hypnotic in effect. Gorgeous!

Climbing Quandary - Robert Sheldon
, by Robert Sheldon, is meant to elicit the feelings one might have while spending the day hiking in the Rocky Mountains. One of the most popular hikes is a climb up to Quandary Peak in Colorado. This mountain was so named because of the mineral outcroppings that confused the prospectors while searching for silver in the 1860s. While being one of the 58 14-ers in Colorado (mountain peaks above 14,000 feet in elevation), it is cited as being one of the easier climbs and is consequently very popular. This would be a great time to enlist your art department to have students display pictures of their mountain artwork or to project images of Quandary Peak, many of which can be found online and royalty-free, during the performance. (1:50) Correlates to , Level 2.

Friends of Capricorn - Frank McKinney
Capricorns love making their own rules and this piece is no exception. The opening fanfare and fugue display the relentless nature of these hardest workers of the zodiac. A contrasting middle section steps quickly into the determined and strong nature of our friends. The closing then reminds us why Capricorns so often make it---they never give up. With contrasting woodwind and brass choirs, rich harmonies, and inspiring melodies, by Frank McKinney brings a musical maturity to the sound of young bands.
