Zeus: King of the Gods - Romeyn, Rob
This monumental programmatic work from the pen of Rob Romeyn captures the myth and legend of Zeus, the mythical master of the gods and men. A sky god, he controls lightning, which he uses as a weapon, and thunder. It opens as Zeus becomes involved in the Trojan war, hurling lightning bolts at his opponents. The tension soon subsides as we are introduced to the eternally beautiful Hera, whom Zeus would eventually marry. The music then ensues as our story unfolds, as Zeus made his domain the mountaintops and clouds where he could survey all creation, and inflict pain and justice on all evildoers. Tension builds as Zeus battles Typhon in hand to hand combat, ending ultimately with Zeus throwing the enormous Mt. Etna at the monster, pinning him underneath. From here, the tension subsides, and a beautiful lyrical section builds to an ending of incredible power and grandeur as Zeus again reaffirms his stature as the ruler of Mt. Olympus. This exceptional work is a wonderful addition to any concert or festival performance!Duration: 8.15

Cut to the Chase (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Stalter, Todd
In popular jargon, the phrase "cut to the chase" means to get to the really interesting or important point, and leave out all that is unnecessary. It originated from early cinematic lore when silent films were full of romantic story lines that inevitably led to much more exciting and memorable chase sequences. In this work, the melodic fragments are tossed around the band to give the impression that everyone is being chased or chasing something. To pay homage to the phrase's past, the frantic atmosphere stops for an obligatory inclusion of a slow, romantic chord progression with a soaring melody, and then the chase resumes, building to a rousing conclusion.Duration: 2:30

The Seville Suite, Highlights from (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Whelan, Bill - De Meij, Johan
The success of Bill Whelan's Riverdance evolved from a concept for music and dance that he established earlier with The Seville Suite, his first major orchestral composition. The Seville Suite was commissioned for Ireland's National Day at the World Expo 1992 in Seville, Spain. Through the score, Whelan tells the story of legendary Irish war hero Red Hugh O'Donnell. At a mere 21 years of age, O'Donnell successfully led a rebellion against the English government in 1593. Johan de Meij's arrangement is an adaptation featuring highlights from the original suite. Lebuinus ex Daventria (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schaars, Peter Kleine
Much like a film score, Peter Kleine Schaars' composition paints colourful images while telling the story of the Anglo-Saxon monk, Lebuinus. In around 768 AD, Lebuinus founded a mission in the Dutch province of Deventer in an effort to convert the Pagan Saxons. Contrasting themes describe the Ijssel Valley, the Saxons and Lebuinus, construction on the church and its subsequent destruction in a clash with the Saxons. The Ijssel-Valley-theme returns one more time in a minor key before each of the themes come together again for one rousing finale. Let battle commence!Duration: 12.00

Prelude and Fugue (The Spitfire) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Walton, William - Noble, Paul
The Prelude and Fugue (The Spitfire) by William Walton, written to accompany the film, The First of the Few, was the film story of the designer of the Spitfire fighter aircraft, R. J. Mitchell. This work was lifted, almost bodily out of the film score: exceptionally (for film music) it needed hardly any modification to turn it into a first-rate concert piece. The prelude, called by Stephen Lloyd one of Walton's finest marches, is the music heard over the opening credit titles in the movie. A central lyrical solo depicts the exhaustion and dying by illness of the aircraft's designer R. J. Mitchell. The fugue is used to describe the making of the Spitfire, and then the patriotic march returns joined with the fugue to mark the completion of the fighter aircraft. The majestic march-like drama of the Prelude is well-suited for graduation and other ceremonial events, and the total piece is a tour de force for contest performance.
