Take the Ribbons - Gary P. Gilroy

Take The Ribbons was commissioned by the Northern California Band Association for the 2011 All-Northern High School Honor Band. The composition was inspired by the story of Delia Haskett Rawson (1861-1949) who was the first woman stagecoach driver for the famous Wells Fargo stage line. The fast and unrelenting music takes the listener on a wild and driving stage coach run, with the threat from any number of dangers in close pursuit or around the next bend.

The Valley of Darkness - Barry E. Kopetz

The Valley of Darkness . . . eerie . . . overgrown . . . unchartered . . . an echo of an era long past. As several imaginary scenes are portrayed, a sense of dread and foreboding permeates as the natives of the valley detect the presence of trespassers upon their land. When the end of the sojourn looms, the speed and urgency of the adventurers increases, and escape through the narrow crevice at the end of the valley is now within their reach. The Untitled March - John Philip Sousa

NEVER BEFORE PUBLISHED. Written shortly before his death, Sousa's "The Untitled March" was never performed during his lifetime because a page of the original was misplaced until it was located by Sousa researcher Loras Schissel in 1989. Keith Brion & Loras Schissel have restored the missing music and then edited the march to conform to the standard performance practices of that time using Sousa's original copy. Besides being an exceptional march in the Sousa tradition, this edition includes extensive performance notes and the full and fascinating story behind this historic piece. This publication is an official, authorized Sousa edition of John Philip Sousa, Inc., the family corporation.

When the morning stars sang - James Curnow

At times intimate and reflective, at times boisterous and unrelenting, this uplifting new work by James Curnow was inspired by the biblical story of Job and his "never give up" attitude. The old spiritual Balm in Gilead is incorporated as the piece takes us through tribulation and solace, turmoil and relief. The full spectrum of orchestration from rich, dark Brasses to flashing Woodwinds, and some small solo recitatives create contrast in density as well as mood. There is a great deal to appreciate in the scoring and construction of this piece as you prepare for performance.
