Gopak - Eric Ewazen
Gopak is the first movement of a set of Symphonic Dances written for the Hofstra Unibersity Wind Ensemble, directed by Peter Boonshaft, who commissioned and premiered the work in 2009. Gopak is a tribute to my Polish and Ukrainian roots. My father used to dance traditional Ukrainian dances including the Gopak, and some of my earliest musical memories include the joyful, energetic, and rhythmic feel of those wonderful folk dances.Gopak has a strong feeling of two beats, is accented quite heavily, and is energetic from beginning to end. The melodies are completely original, but the lively feel of the music calls to my mind the energy of the Gopak, notes composer Eric Ewazen.

Grand Mesa - Eric Ewazen
The Colorado Mesa University Wind Symphony, under direction of Dr. Calvin Hofer, has hosted the annual and continually growing Best of the West Music Festival. In 2007, Ewazen was guest composer and commissioned for a new concert band work to celebrate Grand Junction and the towering Grand Mesa that rises above the town. Inspired by this grand landscape, I set out to write a work which was rich, resonant, colorful and bold, a tribute to this amazing scenery which I ultimately had the pleasure of seeing and exploring first hand. For intermediate to advanced bands.

Nemu-Susato - Jan Van der Roost
Commissioned by the Japan Band Clinic Committee of Yamaha for the Nemu Band Directors Clinic in Nemu no Sato, May 18-20, 1997.The surprising title of this work is an indication of its content. By combining the somewhat similar names 'Nemu no Sato' and 'Susato' into a new word, Jan Van der Roost has produced a significant and interesting subject. The Yamaha corporation has extensive facilities in Nemu no Sato, Japan, including a concert hall, recording studios, hotel and so on. Concerts, workshops, clinics and other events are held here, including the annual Nemu Band Directors Clinic, which consists of numerous musical events. Jan Van der Roost served as guest conductor andspeaker in 1994. He was invited again for the 1997 clinic, this time with a composition assignment. The difficulty level of his new piece was to be Grade 2 - 3 bands. With this in mind, Mr. Van der Roost strove to create a renaissance-like sound. Simultaneously he wished to create a tribute to Tielman Susato who, like Jan Van der Roost, lived and worked in Antwerp in the 16th century. The first performance of Nemu-Susato was conducted by the composer, performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Band, and took place during the Nemu Band Directors Clinic on May 19, 1997.

Spirit of Andalusia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Spirit of Andalusia was commissioned by The Glasgow Wind Band. The brief was to create a fascinating 5-minute opener, however, during the compositional process, the piece started to take the form of a Spanish influenced composition. The composer decided to stick to this involuntary development and started producing a tribute to Spanish music, in particular, Flamenco - which originates from the region of Andalusia. He uses exciting rhythms and colours from the musical culture.Duration: 7.15

Arlington (Where Giants Lie Sleeping) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Murtha, Paul
Composed as a tribute to generations of American servicemen and women buried at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., this powerful and emotional work is a fitting addition to any memorial occasion or patriotic concert. Offstage trumpets announce the opening theme followed by reverent strains and a solemn statement of My Country, 'Tis of Thee. The piece develops and builds gradually, reaching a heroic climax with the familiar hymn God of Our Fathers before returning to a quiet and reflective mood as the offstage trumpets return.Duration: 7:30

Distant Land (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Rutter, John - Noble, Paul
Distant Land was originally written in 1991 as a choral piece inspired by the release of Nelson Mandela from prison. Rutter was encouraged to make a purely orchestral version, from which this band arrangement has been adapted. Rutter says: "Listeners who know the original versions may miss the texts, but looking at it another way, your imagination can be set free with no words to constrain you and tell you what the music is 'about'". Distant Land will surely become a tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela, who was a leader of the anti-apartheid movement who eventually became South Africa's first black president to be elected in a fully democratic election.

Creepy Crawlies (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Story, Michael
Well, you've probably heard of tributes to almost everything, but how about a tribute to bugs? Yes, with tongue very much in cheek, Michael Story has penned this original novelty to bring more than just a snicker from your audiences. Hear the insect as it approaches (your trumpet section playing on mouthpieces) and a resounding "slap" as the culprit is sent to greener pastures. Add some visuals from the band as the insect "circles," and you have yourself a guaranteed successful concert moment. For you environmentalists: No harmful pesticides are included. (Oh my, that's "OFF"-ful!)Duration: 1:45
