Shadows of the Equinox - Robert Sheldon

As summer ends, the chill of the autumn air awakens feelings within us. The shadows are longer in late afternoon and darkness comes early. The trees are losing their leaves and their gnarled trunks and branches take on sinister profiles against the looming twilight. We shudder at the cold wind. Our pulse quickens and we suddenly want to return to the safety and warmth of home. Night falls and we are once again at peace. We say a final farewell to the carefree days of summer and accept the relentless march of the seasons. Winter will soon be here. (5:05) "Shadows of the Equinox" is a dramatic and lyrical piece inspired by a late Midwest autumn. It was commissioned by the 2010 Festival of Bands, Vincennes, Indiana, including the bands from Barr-Reeve, Loogootee, Mitchell, North Daviess, North Knox, and South Knox High Schools. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

    Emerald Suite - Dwayne Milburn

Each of the three movements of this work uses a particular section of the North Texas State Alma Mater as its formative material, since it was commissioned in honor of Dennis Fisher and his 25 years of service to the North Texas State community. The Rondo is mostly in 7/8 and 6/8 time and is highly energetic, though it ends quietly. The Air is gentle and lyrical as it builds to powerful climax and then recedes to the same gentle mood that uses to open the movement. The March provides a perfect balance to the other movements and ends with great excitement. Each of these three movements stands well on their own and can be programmed either separately or in their entirety.

    Firestorm - John O'Reilly

October 28, 2007 began as a typically beautiful Southern California day. But as the composer sat at his piano writing this composition, he became aware of a major firestorm raging within a few miles of his house. Dense smoke filled the air and a steady stream of helicopters flew into the local reservoir to fill up with water to battle the flames. John O'Reilly has crafted a remarkable piece that captures the drama of this event. (3:25) , Book 2, page 23.
