    Emerald Suite - Dwayne Milburn

Each of the three movements of this work uses a particular section of the North Texas State Alma Mater as its formative material, since it was commissioned in honor of Dennis Fisher and his 25 years of service to the North Texas State community. The Rondo is mostly in 7/8 and 6/8 time and is highly energetic, though it ends quietly. The Air is gentle and lyrical as it builds to powerful climax and then recedes to the same gentle mood that uses to open the movement. The March provides a perfect balance to the other movements and ends with great excitement. Each of these three movements stands well on their own and can be programmed either separately or in their entirety.

    Firestorm - John O'Reilly

October 28, 2007 began as a typically beautiful Southern California day. But as the composer sat at his piano writing this composition, he became aware of a major firestorm raging within a few miles of his house. Dense smoke filled the air and a steady stream of helicopters flew into the local reservoir to fill up with water to battle the flames. John O'Reilly has crafted a remarkable piece that captures the drama of this event. (3:25) , Book 2, page 23.

    Wings - Vince Gassi

The men and women of the Royal Canadian Air Force are the inspiration behind this original composition by Vince Gassi. The first work in his , it takes off with a bright, spirited theme first heard in the flutes. The rest of the ensemble soon joins in the maneuvers and offers a fuller tactical report. Clarinets take over with dignity, providing a lyrical contrast, and are supported by a stately accompaniment. It isn't long before we start to feel the "spirit of adventure" building to a contrasting section conveying images of stealth and intrigue. Covert operations lead finally to a restatement of the opening theme by the brass with flute and clarinet obligato. Interlace with fragments from the covert section and we are carried to a soaring conclusion. If you are looking for a spirited concert opener or closer, look no further! Arrival at the Agora - David Marlatt

In ancient Greece an agora was a central meeting place to discuss affairs of state, where business was conducted and people could listen to philosophers. It later evolved into a marketplace where merchants and artisans would sell their wares. In modern times this has transformed into farmers markets and outdoor/street markets such as Portobello Road in London, England and the famous leather market in Florence, Italy. This piece by David Marlatt captures the various sights, sounds, and smells of a traveler wandering through an open air market in either ancient times or more modern.
