I'm Seventeen Come Sunday - Percy Aldridge Grainger / arr. Douglas E. Wagner
Australian-born Percy Grainger developed into one of the most sensationally successful concert pianists of the early 1900s. As a composer and arranger, he is perhaps best known for his work with folk music. Number eight in Grainger's British Folk-Music Settings series, "I'm Seventeen Come Sunday" is actually an amalgam of two English folk songs -- the main tune collected by Grainger in 1905, from Lincolnshire, and a variant of a tune collected by Cecil J. Sharp in 1912, from Sumerset. Welcome Douglas Wagner's sensitive setting of one of Grainger's best-known works. (3:00)

One-Hit Wonders - Mark Williams
Feature your beginning percussionists in this clever one-of-a-kind section feature by Mark Williams. Place the percussion instruments in front of the band, and watch the fun as the percussionists take turns parading through for their "one hit". Then the music speeds up as they do it again until all players scramble into position to play the final note together. (Alternatively, you could also perform this piece using building staff/administrators as guest performers, with the regular percussionists serving as "coaches".) A riotous show-stopper for that first-year concert program. Correlates to , page 24.

Ants in My Pants - Jane Russell Bate
This piece is a sophisticated rag on a not-so-sophisticated subject---a literal case of ants in the pants. As the hapless fellow performs his syncopated gyrations caused by the ants, the music quickens and we hear the victim slapping and scratching in an effort to rid himself of the tickly creatures. Brass players will enjoy flutter-tonguing, glisses, and "wa-was" in this highly entertaining tune. (3:05)

Belle of the Ball for Band - Leroy Anderson
Like most of Leroy Anderson's efforts, "Belle of the Ball" is light, effervescent, and devoid of conflict or disharmony. Anderson looked upon the piece as a modern-day American revival -- or revitalization -- of the Viennese waltz tradition. Having said that, the main theme sounds rather unlike a Strauss waltz, but the voice of Tchaikovsky is evident in its playful, fantasy-like character. The melody is rhythmic and comes in short groups of notes, beginning with two notes, then three, then expanding further; the music skates along elegantly. The middle section features a delightful variation on the theme, in which Anderson's gentle belled sonorities impart a playful innocence. Versions for band and the original orchestral scoring are available.
