The Last Full Measure of Devotion - Robert Jager

This work is a tribute to the many men and women who have served in the U.S. military and, particularly, those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The music begins as if in a mist, with musical fragments gradually being heard, and various images being created. These fragments eventually join to form longer themes that move from sorrow to strength to pride. In the end, a solemn hymn is heard that serves as a benediction with one last call from the trumpet.

Hail the Conquering Hero - George Frederic Handel / arr. David Marlatt

provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. This is one of Handel's best known melodies. This version of the famous Hail the Conquering Hero opens with a solo, gradually adds voices and builds in dynamic, then the sound drops to a duet which starts the building again. Everyone gets a section of melody making it interesting for all. (3:10)

Symphony 1 (Movement 2) - Gustav Mahler / arr. David Marlatt

Mahler is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. There are very few arrangements of his brilliant music so this arrangement for band of his first symphony is quite significant. The melodic material flows all through the ensemble and each section is featured at some point. There is even a significant section in the middle of the work that is a tuba section solo!
