This powerful work depicts the frantic voyage of the RMS Carpathia, the first ship to arrive on the scene after receiving a distress call from the Titanic. Determined to save as many lives as possible, the captain managed to squeeze 17 knots out of a supposed 14-knot vessel. The music depicts the vibrations of the ship's hull along with the hissing of the boiler. As Carpathia arrives on the terrible scene, the music relinquishes its fast pace to a slow, mournful hymn. After a brief moment of tranquility, the music intensifies as the rescue ship embarks on her triumphant yet tragic return voyage to safety. Absolutely stunning!

This is a new edition of Entry March of the Boyars for which Frederick Fennel has provided a contemporary overview of Halvorsen's distinguished and musical contribution to concert march repertory. Prepared from the primary source, the orchestral score of 1895, there is careful musical reconsideration of the entire score, including a full set of percussion parts and music for the low clarinets. The Fennell edition replaces that by Clifford Barnes previously published by Ludwig Music. The Boyars were Russian aristocrats, also a privileged class in Romania. Written in response to the tragic events in Kiev in 2014, this music draws on the old Ukrainian folk song Plyve Kacha, which became an anthem for many protestors as a symbol of national pride while also mourning the fallen. Described by the composer as Arabian Dances meets Moscow, 1941, the music is incredibly powerful yet introspective. Quotes of the Ukrainian National Anthem add to the intensity of the music, which features the instrumentalists singing in 4-part harmony at the very end of the piece. Absolutely stunning.

This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger's original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger's "four-some" edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the "room music" quality of the original shines through in this skillful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen. (3:35)
