Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) belongs to a forgotten generation of English composers who are often over-shadowed by Sir Edward Elgar, and the result has been that much of their work is little played or forgotten. In 2008, composer Philip Sparke published the latest volume of his instrumental books, Super Solos. Young German flautist Meinhard Drescher was so taken with these solos that his father secretly commissioned the composer toarrange three of the solos (Little Overture, Berceuse and Moto Perpetuo) into a mini-concerto for flute and concert band, which was presented to Meinhard as a 16th birthday present. Burlesco Romantico - Menno Bosgra
The colourful, compelling starting theme forms the leitmotiv throughout this piece. It is followed by a very rhythmical part with a catchy melody that is literally and figuratively music to the ear. A slow, almost meditative part follows with a beautiful alto saxophone solo that leads to an impressive chorale. The fast sections are once more repeated towards the end, but in another form. A fantastic composition by Menno Bosgra!

Elegy - Melvin L. Shelton
A touching and intense memoriam piece, the mechanics are on the easy side of Grade 4, but the demand for tone quality and control in tenuto passages and long slurred phrases calls for the best of musicianship from any group. The "Adagio e Rubato" tempo indication invites the kind of wonderfully expressive ensemble playing that should probably make up a larger part of band literature than it does today. Over a quiet unifying heartbeat from the timpani, the band explores the emotions felt after a tragic personal loss. A soaring F Horn solo (cued in Trumpet. and Alto Saxophone) leads poignantly toward a gentle Orchestra Bells and Wind Chime ending.

Accordingly, in Butterfly Overture a charming love theme has been employed, which is introduced by the alto saxophone in the slow middle passage. Additionally, the butterfly is a cheerful flutterer that never moves in a straight line but always with an unexpected motion. In the Vivace the flute initially performs the fluttering theme, after which it has been instrumented in diverse variations throughout the entire band. A wonderful new addition to the Concert Band repertoire that will be a firm favourite for many years.
