Pilgrim Traveler (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Broege, Timothy
Skilfully combining four distinctive melodies from the early American shape-note hymnal The Sacred Harp, Timothy Broege has created a wonderful single movement setting for band that includes many moods and styles. Pilgrim and Traveler form the principal themes of the piece and undergo a series of variations. Aylesbury and Jerrerson are used as transitional melodies and are combined with the other two as the music becomes increasingly complex and contrapuntal. The the words of the composer, 'the music may be heard to portray a journey, perhaps a spiritual quest undertaken by a travelling pilgrim seeking solace or enlightenment.' From tender and serene to bold and stark, this inventive work makes an impressive statement.Duration: 5:45

The Pioneers (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the 'Corps of Discovery' from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touch of the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.Duration: 5:30

Funk Attack (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.
Otto M. Schwarz is endeavoring to contribute new ideas to concert band literature. He has contributed in the field of multimedia (Asteroid), and with his many compositions in symphonic/modern arrangement (Jazz Waltz No 1, Fire and Ice or Band Fever). His new composition Funk Attack is, as the name suggests, a piece in funk style. Otto M. Schwarz first gained his experience in his style in the 8o?s, transcribing numbers by famos Amerarican bands including "Earth, Wind and Fire", "Tower of Power"", and the British slap idol "Mark King" (Level 42). Funk attack is atypical of "the concert band scene" and requires absolute precision in phrasing and rhythm. Without the support of a great percussion groove, the orchestra plays an interlocked theme in the central section in style of recent American Big Bands. Otto M. Schwarz dedicated this work to "Alexander Veit and Symphonic Winds".Duration: 4:45

The Governor's March (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Anderson, Leroy
This wonderful march comes with a remarkable history. Originally titled "Governor Bradford March," it was written for orchestra in 1948. 50 years later (1998) Tom Everett, director of the Harvard University Band, discovered Mr. Anderson's manuscript for band among some other old band arrangements! This band version was performed for the first time in 1999 and the recording was used by National Public Radio. This striking yet very playable cut-time march is an excellent addition to the repertoire of classic American marches.
