Where Angels Fly (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Houben, Kevin

Commissioned by Banda de Musica Municipal de Silleda (ES), Kevin Houben has written this work for the Certamen de Valencia 2018 in Spain. Where Angels Fly is a very technical, powerful and virtuoso work, with a rather fragile and soft introduction in which the main motif, derived from Paul Gilson's La Priere from Le Retour aux Pays, is developed and also includes Houben's own musical signature, HBE(N). Where Angels Fly is a challenging, impressive and virtuosic contest piece.Duration: 16.00

Wings to Fly (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Doss, Thomas

This piece was composed for the youth wind band at the Marienschule in Saarbrcken, Germany. The title praises the importance of an education emphasising freedom, responsibility and getting to know and accepting one's limitations in order to become a well-educated and good-hearted citizen. During the piece, the composer refers to aspects of a typical school-age experience, such as friendship, disappointments, challenges, values and goals. The point is that education gives us all Wings to fly. This is a noble piece, full of variety, with nice sections for all instrumental groups.Duration: 7.15

Highway of Heroes (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Buckley, Robert

Highway of Heroes was composed to honour heroism of all kinds, to pay tribute to the brave souls who daily and unselfishly risk their lives and even pay the ultimate sacrifice. With the use of rich textures and dynamic scoring, this work builds to a stirring theme of hope and inner strength. Girl Power! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Graves, Timothy

Pop music up until the 1980s used to be dominated by male artists and bands, until artists like Cindy Lauper and Madonna came along. With their often provocative lyrics and videos, they put an entire movement in motion which engaged with a new, female audience. This Girl Power Medley features Bitch (Meredith Brooks), Girls Just Want To Have Fun (Cindy Lauper), Like a Virgin (Madonna) and Wuthering Heights (Kate Bush).Duration: 6.00

Eine Kleine Klarinette Musik (Clarinet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

A solo for solo clarinet and band featuring the well-known tune from Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik. I have always thought that Woody Herman's Golden Wedding is a great showpiece for clarinet. He takes a tune entitled La Cinquantaine by the French Romantic composer Jean Gabriel-Marie (1852 - 1928) and sets it as a big band swing piece complete with Krupa Toms. In seeking to emulate it I suddenly realised that the Rondo from Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik K.525 had very much the same character if I presented it in a minor key. It was then really just a matter of organizing the various sections, setting them in a swing manner and adding a cadenza-like passage. There is, of course, a strong connection between Mozart and the clarinet. It was fun to write and will hopefully be a fun solo vehicle for clarinettists. - Rob Wiffin. Duration: 3.30

Festive Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Yagisawa, Satoshi

This work was commissioned by the civilian wind orchestra Shimizu il compagno, based in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, as a commemorative work for their 10th Anniversary. The world premiere was performed by the ensemble, conducted by Hiromichi Hamada in 2017. Having held discussions with the head of the orchestra, Tomohiro Tsuji, and members of the group, Satoshi Yagisawa settled on a central motif for this commemorative work: fellow, or companion, in the sense of the Italian il compagno, which features in the orchestra's name. The work also strives to describe the characteristic friendliness of Shimizu city, a place known for its warmth and kindness which is visible from both Mount Fuji and the sea. The composition is written in Yagisawa's typical dramatic style with an atmosphere of scintillating light and lyrical warmth, making it an excellent choice for opening a concert.Duration: 5.15

Takayama Impressions (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

This piece was written to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Takayama Wind Orchestra, who also commissioned it. The historic city of Takayama draws numerous visitors from home and abroad, not just to see its well-preserved old houses and buildings but also because every year several historic processions take place, with beautiful floats. When these ride through the city, age-old melodies are heard played on wooden flutes, accompanied by muted drums. This image is evoked at the beginning of the work, followed by an archaic sounding melody in a typically Japanese pentatonic sequence, that develops throughout. In this challenging piece Eastern and Western influences alternate, creating a sensational and overwhelming musical effect! Duration: 9.45

Agosto (Euphonium Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

The main theme of this composition was created on a clear, starry night on the 10th of August. While writing it, the Italian composer Angela Ciampani was inspired by her son Lorenzo and the sight of stars over the green hills of Umbria. Initially, it was a short solo for trumpet and piano: subsequently, Jacob de Haan extended and rewrote the composition for euphonium solo and band. This arrangement was created for the celebration of the 170th and 20th anniversaries, respectively, of the concert bands of Monteleone d'Orvieto and Citt della Pieve. Duration: 3.45

Contrasts (Trombone Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

Contrasts was written for, and dedicated to, trombone soloist Dr. Brett Baker. As the titles indicates, contrasting elements characterize this challenging piece. The slow movement Sounds has a somewhat dark and sombre atmosphere, with complex harmonies and special sound effects. However, the second movement, Caprice, is energetic, entertaining, virtuosic and somewhat whimsical - quite a contrast indeed with the first! Duration: 16.30

I Colori della Gioia (Vocal (Soprano) Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

This work for soprano and concert band was originally written for a special occasion: the wedding of one of the composer's children. It therefore matches another piece written for a similar occasion, I Shall Love But Thee. The lyrics are from the book Respiro Neve by the internationally renowned art photographer Luca Artioli, who possesses poetic talent as well. The first movement is stately and serene as where the contrasting allegro is much more dynamic and cheerful, requiring the solid high register of the singer. The conclusion is festive and radiant, partly thanks to the contribution of a piccolo trumpet! This work is a wonderful addition to the band repertoire wanting to perform with an excellent vocal soloist!Duration: 6.45
