African music has been influenced by the West as well, fusing British military and brass band music, along with the hymns and songs of missionaries from Europe and the United States, with tribal folk elements. Exultation is a short and energetic concert opener that is similar to a palindrome. A fanfare opens the work, juxtaposing 3/4 and 6/8, reminiscent of Latin-American music. The main theme is first heard on the euphonium, horns and saxophones which is very bluesy. The contrasting second theme is short and spikey and played by the bass instruments of the band. A lyric melody emerges as the rest of the orchestra joins in. The second theme reappears which leads back to the 'blues' melody, which leads back to the opening fanfare. Palindromic!Duration: 3:00

£75.00Bethlehem Down (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Warlock, Peter - Lane & Noble
There are few instrumental pieces amongst the works of Peter Warlock who wrote chiefly vocal items. Several of his carols have become firmly established in the seasonal repertoire of singers and choirs; none moreso than Bethlehem Down. The string version by Philip Lane stretches the original four verses to five and seeks to make the piece as effective for strings as it is for choirs. No harmonic changes have been made although the voicing has naturally been varied for textural reasons. This adaptation by Paul Noble has added to the variance in instrumental textures to fully realize the tonal colours of the Concert Band. With key signatures of F/d minor, Bb/g minor, Eb/c minor, and Ab/f minor, numerous suspensions, and softer to louder dynamics, this chorale is a perfect warm-up and tune-up piece for the ensemble, while at the same time exploring worthwhile and programmable concert repertoire.

Nevertheless, the extremes of weather through the seasons are reflected here, with an ominous note or two suggesting Belas Knap, an ancient burial ground sited nearby. 5. The final movement takes the traditional Gloucestershire wassail song, heard at Christmas, and manipulates it through any number of filters and distortions.
