Three Scottish Vistas - William Owens

This short three-movement work paints a picture of one of the most beautiful and historically rich countries in the world. The first movement, This Proud People, quotes bits of Scotland the Brave, the unofficial anthem of Scotland, before introducing the sounds of a traditional pipe and drum band. The second movement, The South of Skye, pays tribute to countless quiet sandy beaches and small islands. The final movement, Glasgow, the West End, salutes this culturally rich area with a wild fiery jig that continues to accelerate to a powerful conclusion. Fantastic writing!

    Slava

Once the Russian National Anthem, this hymn has a rich tradition dating back five centuries. This magnificent tune has been masterfully arranged by Douglas Wagner, who incorporates Rimsky-Korsakov's original orchestra and mixed choir voicing into the fabric of this wind band score while maintaining the integrity and spirit of the original. The dignified melodic statement follows a regal fanfare-like introduction. Be certain to include this terrific program music on your first concert performance. (4:30)

The Maple Leaf Forever - Alexander Muir (1830-1906) / arr. David Marlatt

This rousing and patriotic song was written in 1867, the year of Canada's Confederation. It became very popular and, for many years, was the unofficial national anthem of Canada. The piece opens with a snare drum and gradually introduces the theme in the altos and flutes, while the trumpets play bugle calls that are echoed by the clarinets. This introduction could serve as an opportunity for the choir to "march" into position and be ready for the chorus that appears at the key change. This arrangement is part of a collection for young band celebrating Canada's 150th anniversary since joining Confederation.

Fantasy on "Chester" - William Billings / scored by Michael Story

This famous melody became very popular during the American Revolution and was first published in 1778 as a patriotic hymn. It served as the unofficial national anthem during that war. Michael Story infuses this tune with satisfying harmonic structuring and presents it in a version playable by the youngest band or ensemble. A most satisfying and sophisticated presentation. (1:51)
