Return of the Vikings (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

This composition paints a picture of belligerent and brave Vikings. After a short introduction the lofty main theme is heard, accompanied by sombre drum sounds. A brief idyllic passage follows that evokes a beautiful landscape. Gradually, a heroic melody is revealed, leading to a great tutti, in which the rousing main theme is heard once more. Return of the Vikings closes with the sound of heroic brass and festive chords. Duration: 3.15

Magnolia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

Just as the magnificent blooms of the magnolia appear in springtime, so this simple choral melody opens slowly and gracefully, eventually blossoming to a glorious climax. The delightful opening theme is taken up again, and eventually everything comes to rest, like a bud that closes at the day's end. Duration: 5.45

The Beauty of Belisia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

Belisia is the old Merovingian name of the Belgian town of Bilzen who commissioned this composition. It is also the composer's place of birth. The work has two main themes. The melancholic theme in a minor key refers to the many ravages the town has suffered through the years and the second theme, stately and heroic, represents the inner strength and courage of the proud inhabitants of this town.Duration: 5:30

The Olympic Dream (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

Every athlete dreams of winning a medal at the Olympic Games: it's the ultimate dream. The mood of the games is indeed unique: stadiums filled to the brim, triumphant heroes, a sense of unity but often also of disappointment. These emotions are evoked in "The Olympic Dream" by a compelling and melodious theme that is repeated four times with varying accompaniment.

Gulliver's Travels (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

The book Gullivers Travels (1726) by author Jonathan Swift formed the provocation for writing this composition. Even though this composition isnt a literal representation of the original story, a number of elements were still retained. The ships doctor Gulliver finds himself in 4 (fictive) areas, each with their own inhabitants and customs. Each part of this suite also received the name of one of these areas:I. Lilliput The enterprising Lilliputians are represented by a playful, common theme in the first part.II. BrobdingnagIn the land of "Brobdingnag" Gulliver is carried off by gigantic giants, which you hear approaching with the sounds of the bassinstruments. The same theme is constantly repeated and quickened in order to increase the tension.III. LaputaLaputa is an island that floats in the air; its inhabitants are strange people with slanting heads. The dreamy, special atmosphere is especially well conveyed here.IV. The HouyhnhnmsFinally Gulliver finds himself in the land of the Houyhnhnms, where intelligent and noble horses rule over the primitive, undeveloped people (yahoos). The trumpets in the brilliant opening express the galloping horses; the gallant theme that follows (horns and trombones) symbolises the primitive yahoos. The whole composition ends with a big finale.I intentionally tried to limit the degree of difficulty of Gullivers Travels. Despite this I think that this work can appeal to many orchestras due to the colourful orchestration (cues are provided where needed), the simple and clear theme and the highly imaginative breeding ground of a beautiful story around which this composition is built." Evening Rise - Bert Appermont

This work is based on five folk songs from different cultures. Each song brings its own atmosphere and character, giving rise to a musical journey across the world in one continuous whole. Featuring Evening Rise (America), Lo Yisa Goy (Israel), Sakura (Japan), Finnegans Wake (Ireland) and Siyahamba (South Africa). The Native American song Evening Rise functions as a sort of chorus and thus creates a certain unity; each time the melody is arranged in a different way.

Legend of the Bell - Bert Appermont

This work was inspired by the legend of the Klokkeven, in which a church bell plays the leading part. It forms a connecting thread throughout the composition. The work consists of three continuous movements, each with its own atmosphere and character. In The Black Robber, we hear dark sounds in the brass and fast chromatic motifs. The Swamp contains mysterious low parallel fifths, imploring solos and chafing dissonant harmonies. Finally, in The Bell sweetly musing solos are hopefully accompanied by the church bell ringing from a distance. After a number of changes in tempo, the music ends in a grand tutti.

    A Hero's Tale - Bert Appermont

This composition is based on the life of the German cavalry general Hans Michael Elias von Obentraut (1574-1625), who was known for his nerve, loyalty and courage. The figure Van Obentraut is closely connected to the town of Seelze, where he died a heroic death and where a monument was erected in his honour. The work consists of four movements in which various aspects of this historical figure are featured. What is extra special about this work is the fact that its first movement (Hymn for a Hero) had been made available as an easy version for flexible band. This makes it possible for a youth or beginner band to play along with a band of adults or advanced players. This hymn can also be played as a separate piece.

    Majestic Entrance - Bert Appermont

Majestic Entrance is a festive opening work with cinematic influences. It was written for the Swiss Musikverein Muttenz; this music society celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2021 - more than enough reason for a commissioned composition. The work consists of three movements: a heroic opening passage, a lyrical middle movement and a return to the opening. All in all a composition of majestic charm!
