    Proven - Kevin Houben

'Proven' was composed by Kevin Houben on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Royal Wind Band 'De Volksvreugd'meaning ' People's Joy' in 2021.As its name suggests the musical band of the West Flemish village , municipality of Poperinge (B), had to bring joy againto the people. At that time there was still a striking industry of woodworkers, including that of slat splitters and hoop cutters. Moreover the cultivation of hops, necessary for the brewing of beer, remained important. Shortly after World War I theassociation was founded in the cellars of the brewer- mayor.Soon the joy was not only experienced by its listeners but also by its members. Already from its foundation onwards, thecandidate musicians flocked in and still nowadays 'De Volksvreugd' can take pride in having more than 100 members in itsyouth orchestra, having a drum band, an ambiance band and a wind band. Participation in tattoo and competitions ensuresan excellent musical level. Moreover musicians of all ages feel like family. For the previous 100 years 'De Volksvreugd' has'proven' to bring joy to the people and by the people. The chant 'Long live the Volksvreugd/ People's Joy' clearly provesits popularity. This energetic and festive composition has a very recognizable and powerful introduction, after which each musician ischallenged concerning technique, rhythm and ensemble playing. Also the magnificent melodic part, which Houben iswell-known for, is very melodious and intimate followed by a lyrical highlight to culminate into an energetic and rhythmicalfinal. Ideal for any concert!

    Magellano - Andrea Moncalvo

This composition was written on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer (1480 - 1521), who embarked on what would have become the first circumnavigation of the globe. Unfortunately, he did not complete it because, in 1521, he was killed in the region that is today the Philippines. This adventure triggered various images in the author's mind; evocations that the composer elaborated in this piece, which is in a tripartite form (A B A) and is introduced and concluded by a solemn fanfare evoking the departure of the expedition, consisting of 5 ships with a total of 234 crewmen. The first part (Allegro) presents a main theme with a cantabile character that describes the fleet that, intrepid, plows the ocean. This initial melody is then contrasted by a more rhythmic and syncopated theme in a minor key, which instead refers to the indigenous peoples they have encountered during the journey. The central section (Adagio) is an oasis of reflection because, as in other great adventures, this too has tragic aspects: mutinies, shipwrecks, clashes with indigenous peoples, up to the disappearance of those who had desired and planned this enterprise. The last part proposes the themes of the first section but in reverse order, to describe the return to the homeland. The solemn fanfare welcomes the arrival of the Victoria, the only surviving ship with only 18 men on board, which returns to the port of departure after completing the circumnavigation of the earth in 2 years, 11 months, and 17 days.

Music for Junior Wind Band - Vol. 5 - More Carols - Adrian Taylor

The arrangements and compositions in these books were written by Adrian Taylor for various beginner or school bands that he has conducted over the years. Children joined these bands on the 2nd parts, usually having only been playing for a year and they then progressed to the 1st parts the following year. The 2nd parts are written without key signatures in treble clef, in B flat major for bass clef trombone and euphonium and in E flat major for bass clef tuba. 1st parts are written with the appropriate key signatures for each piece, reflecting the greater understanding and skills of the players on these parts. Most of the pieces can be played with only a few parts being covered, the addition of the other parts usually enhancing the arrangement rather than simply doubling existing musical lines. The essential parts are the two Trumpet (and Clarinet or Cornet) parts, the two Trombone/Euphonium parts and preferably also the 1st Horn part. A piano part helps to fill out the harmonies where other parts are missing. The brass parts in the wind band versions are identical to those in the brass versions.
