Extra Score only. The work begins with a solemn declamatory cadenza for the soloist; a short interlude leads to an allegro with spiky cross-rhythms. A further cadenza ends the movement and links to the second, Elegy for Miles Davis (available separately), a deeply felt Ballad accompanied by electric bass and band with a central section for improvisation. The ensuing vivo starts with a bold statement by the trumpet with cross rhythms reminiscent of the opening allegro that extends into the band. It is interrupted by the declamatory cadenza material, the trumpet supported by the band and the movement ends with a molto vivo coda of tremendous energy. Duration: 19-20 mins.

One of Irving Berlin's most popular songs is given the big band treatment by Jerry Nowak. It starts out with an up tempo swing, dense with harmony, and leads to a jazz ballad in the middle of the piece. This is then followed by a swing roll-off and a catchy Dixieland treatment of the tune by a brass quintet. It finishes up with the full band swingin' at the end. The Cherry Tree Carol is a Christmas carol with roots that go deep and wide: from medieval England back to the 12th century Crusader kingdoms and ultimately to early Christian communities of the Middle East who worshipped in Syriac, a liturgical form of Aramaic, the language of Jesus. The song itself is very old, reportedly sung in some form at the Feast of Corpus Christi in the early 15th century. The ballad relates an apocryphal story of the Virgin Mary, presumably while traveling to Bethlehem with Joseph for the census. In the most popular version, the two stop in a cherry orchard, and Mary asks her husband to pick cherries for her, citing her child. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

The third movement of Opus 34 (Three Festival Choruses), which Gustav Holst penned in 1916, was originally scored for chorus with piano, orchestra, or military band. The easily recognized melody is a nineteenth century Welsh ballad, known to most as the hymn tune "St. Denio," set to the words of English poet, Clifford Bax. In 3/4, this characteristically delightful Holst theme has been freely arranged to incorporate elements of his original score with additional material included to heighten musical interest for contemporary concert bands and audiences alike. As the title implies, chimes are an integral part of this arrangement; however, there are alternate options provided in the program notes if a suitable instrument is unavailable.
