Bang the Drum All Day (I Don't Want to Work) - Todd Rundgren

Although it's been called a goofy novelty, this classic Todd Rundgren rock-and-roll favorite is perfect for your beginners. A hard driving rock beat with repeated eighths throughout sets the stage for a big sound in Bang the Drum All Day. The Coldstream Guards - Elliot Del Borgo

Beginning with the steady beat of two snare drums, The Coldstream Guards is a fine example of an English style march by a master of band scoring. Tuneful and colorful, it pays tribute to the pageantry and dignity of the Queen of England's own guard. It will be an excellent alternative to standard marches as a contest warm-up. Duration: 2' 40"

    American Ballad Variants

A fresh and spirited treatment of the traditional American ballad Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair, this fine piece for a developing band starts with a slow and atmospheric introduction featuring solos by flute and trumpet that hint at the tune. The main section sets the ballad to a driving Latin beat, but the slow reflective mood returns at the end with solos for clarinet, bass clarinet and flute.

    Tock - Kenneth Froelich

Tock is a single movement work for concert band that uses percussion and asymmetrical rhythms to mimic the "tocking" of a broken clock. The repetition of melodies and of motive fragments are used to establish a regular pulse; however, while this pulse is steady, it is not even. A five-four time signature, a syncopated bass line and irregular phrases are all used to offset the central beat of the music. Much like the clock, the end result is a dance that seems consistent but is in fact "broken." Its a work that is both fascinating and creative, excellent cutting-edge writing for upper-level ensembles.

Suite on Celtic Folk Songs - Tomohiro Tatebe

This suite for wind band consists of three Old Irish melodies: "March" is a traditional Irish march of slower 6/8 beat. Led by a characteristically accented drum, the drone effect of a Uilleann bagpipe rings through for an air of courage. Next is a beautiful and nostalgic theme titled "Yellow Village Gate" in Gaelic, the first language of Ireland. Here, a solo piccolo presents the image of a simple fife. "Reel" is a typical Irish dance of very quick tempo. Maintaining the pace from beginning to end, intensified motion combining duple and 6/8 meter drives through to the coda's bold conclusion. The Best of Village People

Everything started when two Frenchmen, Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, after having sold over ten records with their band, the Ritchie Family, decided to try out something new. The basic idea was to form a new group inspired by the American male myths of the seventies: cowboys, Indians, men in leather clothes, soldiers and policemen. This is how the Village People were born.Their secret was their energy, cheerfulness and tongue in cheek humour combined with strong disco beat and an arresting visual presence. Even now a Village People song is guaranteed to fill the dance floor in any club or disco. The Best of Village People is a medley including the following pieces: In theNavy,Y.M.C.A. and Macho Man.

Danse Bacchanale (from Samson and Delilah) - Camille Saint-Saƫns

MusicWorks - Grade 4 Exotic and exciting certainly describe this familiar work from Samson and Delilah by Saint-Sans. This masterful transcription for band by Jay Bocook presents challenging (yet certainly attainable) parts for the woodwinds, as well as dynamic writing for the brass and percussion sections. The vivace section to the end is simply hard to beat for full-throttle power and excitement. (4:20)
