Egmont Overture - Ludwig van Beethoven / arr. John Cacavas
This is great music that works extremely well for band when scored by a master arranger like John Cacavas. Beethoven composed the incidental music to Goethe's tragedy Egmont in 1810 (opus 84). The story concerns a historic figure, the Count of Egmont in the Netherlands, who is condemned to death by the occupying Spaniards. Like his only opera, Fidelio, it was a tale that attracted the composer because of the concept of individual freedom.

Finale (from Symphony #1) - Ludwig van Beethoven / arr. David Marlatt
The nine Symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven are considered by many to be among the greatest orchestrations of all time and they are often used as models by later, great composers. His Symphony No. 1 was written in 1800 and shows the powerful influences of Haydn and Mozart. The form is clear and the use of tonality is very traditional. This sort of clarity is ideal as a showpiece for band. Technical woodwind parts and supporting articulated brass passages make this orchestral transcription a great new addition for the repertoire of the concert band.

Romance, Opus 40 - Ludwig van Beethoven / arr. Todd Stalter
Beethoven wrote two "Romances" for violin and orchestra; his second one, the Op. 40 in G Major, was actually published in 1802, two years before the Op. 50 in F Major, even though the F Major "Romance" was composed four years earlier. The double stops of the violin solo are faithfully preserved in this arrangement, and careful attention to articulation and emphasis on melodic playing by every section of the band will make this piece an ideal choice to introduce the music of this master composer to young musicians.
