The Gallant Seventh - John Philip Sousa

Col. Bourgeois knowledge of performance practice in the original Sousa band is seen throughout this fine march. The regimental trumpets and drums should stand behind the band for the most authentic musical effect. It is truly gallant!

    Suite Ancienne - Johan Halvorsen

In 1911 Johan Halvorsen composed incidental music for a production of Ludvig Holbergs play "The Lying-in Room" and later arranged the music into his "Suite Ancienne Op. 31." The suite in five movements contains some of Halvorsens most descriptive musical output. In harmony and instrumentation, he bursts the bounds of his baroque canvas, imbuing his music with the unmistakable stamp of Neoclassicism. The five movements consists of: 1. Intrada, 2. Air con variations, 3. Gigue, 4. Sarabande, and 5. Bouree. The arranger, Colonel John Bourgeois, has also arranged Halvorsens In Memoriam, Op.30 and the four-movement "Little Masquerade Suite." He notes that the "Suite Ancienne" may be played as a complete entity or each of the movements may be performed individually.

Ignatian Fanfare - John R. Bourgeois

Written for the centennial of Loyola University, New Orleans and premiered by the Loyola University Band on April 12, 2012 with the composer conducting. This fanfare is based on a motive from the Jesuit motto "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam" ("to the greater glory of God") and is based on the notes A, D, G. The fanfare opens with timpani, a tintinnabulum of bells and brass, and wolf calls in the horns. A martial hymn tune appears which evokes the soldierly order of Ignatius Loyolas early years. The work closes with a rhythmic ostinato based on the words "Fight, fight, fight, ye men of the South!" The composer is a graduate of Loyola and received an honorary Doctor of Music degree in 2005.

March from the Ballet Corso Donate - Joseph Lanner

A contemporary (and, some would say, rival) of Johann Strauss I in 19th-century Vienna, Joseph Lanner was, for a time, more popular and widely performed than his associate. After a much-publicized separation of the two musical giants, Lanner was appointed to the coveted post of Musik-Direktor of the Redoutensale in the Habsburg Imperial Palace. Lanners ballet was written in September of 1841; this superb Bourgeois edition brings the work to the wind ensemble repertoire. It is an outstanding example of the Austrian march genre.

Prelude to Parsifal - Richard Wagner

Parsifal, written in 1882, was the final opera by composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883). The prelude is a miniature masterpiece consisting of only 116 measures. The form of the prelude is similar to that of the classical three-movement overture and consists of four musical motives: the mystical realm of the Holy Grail; the Grail itself in the Dresden Amen; Faith, represented by the brass chorale; and the Agony of Amfortas. This transcription by John R. Bourgeois faithfully adheres to Wagners intent both in key relationships and orchestration.

    Danzas Cubanas - Ignacio Cervantes

Ignacio Cervantes (1847 - 1905) was a Cuban pianist and composer who achieved fame and recognition in his native country. Cervantes is best known for his considerable influence in blending various aspects of creole musical culture with that of Cuban music for a totally unique and appealing sound tableau. Four of Cervantes colorful dances are included in this brilliant setting for wind band. They are Danzas Nos. 1 and 2, the melancholy Soledad, the lively Picatazos, and a reprise of Soledad. In May of 2017 Colonel Bourgeois will premiere this arrangement when he directs Cuban musicians from the National Band in Havana and American musicians from four leading American universities in the inaugural Cuba/U.S Wind Band Symposium.

Voluntary on 'Old Hundreth' - Henry Purcell

Henry Purcell's epitaph in the Westminster Abbey reads "Here lyes Henry Purcell Esqre, who left this Lyfe and is gone to that Blessed Place where only his Harmony can be exceeded." Purcell's setting of this melody composed by Frenchman Louis Bourgeois has been skillfully arranged for concert band by James Curnow. Delightfully characteristic Baroque counterpoint and harmonies form a great style study for your band while being a wonderful performance piece. Sostenuto passages, a controlled playing style, superb counterpoint, terraced dynamics and good activity for each wind section of the band may make this the perfect "middle" piece for your adjudicated band festival thisyear!
