This dynamic and intense work describes a phenomenon in which clouds follow the same pattern as waves in the ocean. After an introspective opening, the music grows in intensity with long sustained chords pushing through intense rhythmic movement. Eventually, woodwinds become the focus of the work in a subdued section before undulating percussion begin the final powerful drive. Woodwinds join in a flurry of activity while brass players sustain epic chords once more, until a whirlwind of notes converge into one chaotic statement, punctuated by dissonant chords in the brass. The final sequence will leave the audience gasping. Intense!

Delmar Festival Overture is a powerful concert overture utilizing many of the contemporary compositional techniques that distinguish John O'Reilly's work. From the opening brass fanfare to the exciting conclusion, syncopated rhythms and numerous, interesting shifts of meter abound. Biting polychords establish the predominant harmonic structure for the opening "Allegro," but the majestic theme that follows in the horns and saxes takes on a decidedly British band style. The lyrical middle section begins with a fully scored chorale, which serves as the subject for a lovely melodic development featuring woodwinds and French horn. A brilliant brass fanfare ushers in a return to the opening section, which is now reorganized and further developed to bring this exciting overture to its dramatic conclusion. A great concert opener that will show off the talents of your musicians!

Inspired by the majestic Alaskan landscape, Glacier Bay provides plenty of opportunities for dynamic and expressive playing by the young musicians. Following a brief introduction, the main theme is presented first by the trumpets and then by the low brass and trumpets in a lively and flowing manner. The active syncopated accompaniment patterns in the low brass and woodwinds provide an effective contrast to the melody. The B section of the piece moves smoothly into a stately, alla breve tempo with a clarinet choir making the first presentation of the melody. Following a very peaceful conclusion to the B section, an abbreviated restatement of the A section melody leads to the dynamic ending.

an original composition by Steve Hodges, contains elements of both traditional and contemporary marches. The spirited opening theme features a playful give-and-take between the brass and the upper woodwinds. A contrasting minor section is presented by the clarinets, saxophones and horns before returning to a charming woodwind variation of the initial presentation. Following an effective modulation, the piece finishes with a powerful restatement of the opening theme with woodwind countermelodies complementing the strong brass and percussion. This is a very fresh march from the former director of the United States Marine Band. It is more of a concert march than a street march and makes wonderful use of the many voices of the band, from a delightful flute/piccolo melody to a lush low brass statement in which only the brass voices are heard, without constant pulse of percussion. In fact, the percussion parts are particularly wonderful in that they enhance the musical lines of the overall work rather than merely keeping time in typical march fashion. This is a terrific march for any band.

"Highland Trace" begins with a hymn-like melody presented in choirs of woodwinds and brass. This leads to an allegro section that features distinctly Celtic sounding themes alternating between the brass and woodwinds. Finally, while the percussion maintain a rhythmic accent, the full wind band joins in an ascending new theme. As the piece draws to an end the Celtic theme is re-visited and the initial melody leads to a building climax in the final measures.
