A Psalm of Praise - Score only - James Curnow
Program NotesOriginally conceived as a brass band tone poem, A Psalm of Praise gained huge popularity when it was first published in 1980. When it first appeared in print, the work was widely performed by Salvation Army bands around the world. It is full of interest and presents plenty of what for many bands will be realistically achievable levels of musical and technical challenge.As with much Salvation Army music, it was inspired by words from scripture, specifically from Psalm 100. Musically, it is based on the well-known hymn tune Praise My Soul the King of Heaven, with motifs and fragments of the tune appearing throughout the work in various guises alongside the original thematic material.James Curnow's skillfully economic use of melodic and rhythmic ideas is demonstrated to perfection in this work, which will be rewarding to rehearse in detail and perform and will provide a useful addition to concert repertoire.

Program NotesOriginally written as the 'show opener' for one of The Salvation Army's spectacular annual Christmas Carol concerts in London, and premiered by The International Staff Band, Stephen Bulla's overture The Proclamation of Christmas is an extended work that features a number of popular Christmas tunes, including Hark The Herald Angels Sing, Ding Dong Merrily on High, and The First Nowell. There are also two slightly less well-known tunes that are linked to the carols - While Shepherds Watched and Angels from the Realms of Glory - and the piece concludes with a final flourish from O Come, All Ye Faithful.Its dramatic opening and imaginative structure make it a rewarding piece to rehearse and perform, and it certainly fulfills all the requirements of a Christmas show opener! So, we firmly believe that this overture will be a popular addition to Christmas repertoire for concert band in the same way as it was in its original version for brass band.

Programme notes from the composer, Arthur J Michaels:"Procession of the Regal Scepter," (Grade II level), captures the regal splendor and majestic grandeur of processions, inaugurations, coronations and other stately ceremonies past and present, here and abroad.The piece begins with dignified legato phrases. A middle section features the brass instruments in a more punched, staccato style, followed by the woodwinds' antiphonal response. The piece then restates both the legato phrases of the beginning and the antiphonal staccato portions, and the piece ends in a stirring finish."Procession of the Regal Scepter" is within reach of less experienced bands yet suitable for more experienced groups. Ample doubling and cues let bands with limited or uneven perform the piece successfully. The piece's plentiful cuing allows for great performance flexibility. For this reason, "Procession of the Regal Scepter" works well in any concert program.

Guardians of the Waves was commissioned by the Japan Coast Guard Band to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2018. They gave the premiere as part of a 30th anniversary concert on November 8th that year. Set in traditional march form, Guardians of the Waves opens with a short introduction, which leads to the main theme, played initially by the brass and then repeated with a florid woodwind descant. The theme is extended and morphs into a second theme, first played tutti and then quietly repeated by bassoon, tenor sax and euphonium. This leads to a conventional 'bass strain', played twice with varying accompaniments. A quieter trio section follows, delicately scored and featuring the tenor instruments of the band. Taken up by the full band, this leads back to a recall of the introduction and a return to the main two themes, which lead to a triumphal close. Duration: 4.00

Song of Friendship was commissioned by the Concert Band of Jumonji University, Saitama, Japan and their conductor, Yutaka Nishida. The commission marked the 50th year of Yutaka Nishida's involvement with bands as a player, conductor and radio presenter. The ceremonial Song of Friendship opens with an extended fanfare, largely featuring the brass section. This leads to the main theme, which develops slowly until it is played by the full band. A change of key signals a contrasting central section containing a quiet woodwind chorale, which grows until the return of the triumphant sounding main theme. Khvarenah: The city of light is Alga's second wind orchestra piece. Written in 2015 for a competition held by the Abingdon Concert Band in Oxfordshire, UK, it tries to capture the spirit of 'Khvarenah', an Avestan word for the Zoroastrian concept of 'royal glory' and 'splendour'. It opens with a quiet, steady layering of woodwind and brass, depicting an ancient desert city in the vast lands as the sun emerges from the horizon. We are then taken through the bazaars of the city as the markets are filled with joyful shouting and music and dance before entering the central courtyards, the royal army saluting their newly crowned king, heralding in a new era of glory.
