£122.50Mercury Rising - Philip Sparke
Mercury Rising was commissioned by sinfonisches blasorchester wehdel and its conductor Thomas Ratzek, to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018. They premiered this piece in their half-century concert on 2nd November 2018 in the Bremerhaven Stadttheater in Germany. Designed as a virtuosic and lively opener, Mercury Rising opens with nervous energy and driving, syncopated rhythms in a blaze of colour. The horns and saxophones then introduce a broad melody, which the trumpets subsequently take up after a change of tonality. A quieter moment introduces a distant fanfare on muted horns over bubbling semiquavers in the low clarinets. This is interrupted by a passionate tenor melody but soon returns on the full brass section, accompanied by echoes of the opening woodwind figuration, and is extended to bring the piece to a triumphant close.

Long Road has the simple sincerity of a hymn yet is is both beautiful and lush. At the midway point a gentle susurration of bell-sounds, descant recorders and tin whistles appear over sustained brass. There is a brief downwards shift of a third, followed by an elated return to the home key before the evanescent tinkling ushers the piece to its close. Phillip Littlemore has here created a vivid new version for concert band. Band Grade: 4

Edelweiss Brass Orchestra is a Japanese concert band based in the heart of Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 1978, the ensemble has grown from musical strength to strength and in 2018 they commissioned a new work with Jan Van der Roost for their 40th anniversary concert. The title Hidamari could loosely be translated as "In the Sunshine". A short quote from the famous musical The Sound of Music (you got it, 'Edelweiss'!) is a subtle nod to the name of the commissioning ensemble. Hidamari reflects the idea that EBO is like a home for all musicians: together, they are one big family.

Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was a British composer. His most famous work is the orchestra suite "The Planets". "Jupiter Hymn" is an excerpt from the fourth movement named "Jupiter". This Young Band arrangement is a good choice to showcase the horn-section of the band. The clarinet-parts in the beginning of the piece may be omitted if the band not require doublings of the brass parts.

"Introduction" is a short concert opener. I quote a couple of Norwegian Folk Tunes to make a musical picture of the Vikings running from the seashore to face a battle. They used to drink something made of mushrooms to prevent fear and pain - They became Berserkings! The piece was originally scored for Brass Band and commissioned by Manger Musikklag in 1998. This version was commissioned by The Royal Norwegian Navy Band in 2002 and re-edited in 2018.

In A Knight's Tale, Wilco Moerman takes the listener back to the Middle Ages, when castles, knights' tournaments and charming ladies were the order of the day. It describes scenes of the middle ages as one would expect from fairytales or movies featuring this period - with a duel between knights, hidden romances and a battlefield. The composer makes sure that all groups are well represented and includes lots of brass and percussion as well as chanting melodies and spectacular virtuoso segments which make this piece a perfect contest or concert opportunity.

Escape from Dead Raider's Hollow is a fast-paced adventure. Opening quietly, the introduction gradually builds in volume and energy up to a tempo change where the piece takes off and doesn't relent until the end. Combining rhythms of 3 over a pulse of 2 creates a hemiola effect that drives the piece forward, creating a feeling of anxiety and being chased. This is a bombastic, action-packed piece with loud percussive hits, huge brass, and soaring woodwinds that ends with a bang. (2:30)

Stand Tall America
Andrew Balent lends his arranging skills in this new patriotic salute for young band. A bright opening fanfare quickly moves into a lyrical treatment of America, the Beautiful. After a brief restatement of the opening material, the arrangement moves into Battle Hymn of the Republic. Fanfares in the brass punctuate the melody as the piece moves to a stirring conclusion.

Three Meditations - Erik Morales
