This Wind Band orchestration of Wilby's Paganini Variations attempts to capture the range of colour and expression of the original. There are opportunities abound for every member of the wind orchestra to play a convincing role in the drama. The intention of the Brass Band work was to use more of Paganini than his time honoured melody (from his twenty-fourth Caprice with a set of fourteen variations), but would also attempt to recreate in modern terms something of the wild and romantic spirit of the times.

Malcolm Arnold's Four Irish Dances are from the latter stage of his career. The 1986 piece complements his other regional dance suites for orchestra, including Cornish, English and Scottish dances, though it darker in mood and colour. Stomping brass and drums in the opening Allegro con Energico give way to two spare middle movements: a Comodo made from anguished melodic imitation and a lilting Piacevole with eerie solo piccolo and miniature trio for trumpets. The 11 minute piece concludes with a wild, contrapuntal jig in triple time.The original orchestra version of the work was premiered at the Leeds Castle Festival on 10 October 1987, by the Wren Orchestra conducted by the composer.

Extra Score. This suite - originally a brass band work - was commissioned jointly by the Black Dyke Band and the Brass Band Heritage Trust. The composer later made this version for concert band. The work is intended to be played without a break but divides naturally into three sections. Each section is based upon a traditional Welsh melody treated in free variation manner, respectively Gwyr Harlech (Men of Harlech), Suo-Gan (Cradle Song) and Codiad Yr Hedydd (The Rising of the Lark). Score and Parts. SPECTRUM. This work caused much consternation when it was used as the brass band test piece at the 1969 British Open Competition. The score is an uncompromising one and as colourful as its title suggests. The various episodes of the work are each named after a colour from the spectrum - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Purple (changed from Violet when Vinter became conscious of his failing health). It is a piece of violent mood swings challenging all sections of the band. Many consider this to be the finest of Vinter's small output for band.
